Appeal Tribune ܂ WEDNESDAY, JULY 4, 2018܂ 1B Sports SOFTBALL Scio’s Phillips tops All-Mid-Valley Scio High’s Ashton Phillips was named Class 3A Player of the Year. ANNA REED/STATESMAN JOURNAL Gary Horowitz Salem Statesman Journal USA TODAY NETWORK Scio senior shortstop Ashton Phillips put up off-the-charts numbers in her fi- nal high school season. Phillips, the Class 3A Player of the Year, hit .676 with seven homers and 56 RBI. She led the Loggers to a 26-3 record that included the PacWest Conference championship and a spot in the Class 3A state semifinals. Phillips, who will continue her soft- ball career at Oregon State, was named softball player of the year June 4 at the Mid-Valley Sports Awards. It was a banner season for many area players, who excelled in the field and at the plate. On the team side Dayton won the 3A state championship, and the 2A state title went to Kennedy. Here’s a look at the All-Mid-Valley softball team. First team All-GVC, member of 6A all-state team Sports Awards: Finalist NADIA WITT School: McNary Year: Senior Position: Outfield Accomplishments: Hit .602 with six HR, 29 RBI, 46 runs scored, 17 stolen bases. GVC Player of the Year, first team 6A all-state. Will continue her softball career at UC Riverside Sports Awards: Finalist MAYGEN MCGRATH School: South Salem Year: Senior Position: Shortstop Accomplishments: Hit .592 with five HR, 29 RBI. First team all-GVC, sec- ond team 6A all-state. Will continue her softball career at the University of Mon- tana KAELYNN SIMMONS School: Dallas Year: Junior Position: Pitcher Accomplishments: Was 22-0 with a 1.30 earned run average, 155 strikeouts and 38 walks in 122 innings. Mid-Wil- lamette Conference Pitcher of the Year, first team 5A all-state. Hit a See SOFTBALL, Page 2B BASEBALL Aaron Zavala makes All Mid-Valley team Gary Horowitz Salem Statesman Journal USA TODAY NETWORK In high school baseball circles it would be difficult to find a more impact- ful player this season than South Sa- lem’s Aaron Zavala. Zavala, a senior catcher, hit .561 with six homers, 19 doubles, 40 RBI and 49 runs scored, and stole 26 bases in 27 at- tempts. He had a .656 on base percent- age and .939 slugging percentage. Zavala is also a pitcher and on the hill he put up equally impressive numbers: Zavala was 6-0 with a 1.40 earned run average, and had 40 strikeouts in 40 in- nings. A standout defensive catcher, Zavala had the added responsibility of calling the pitches. Zavala, who helped lead South Salem to a 24-7 record and the semifinals of the 6A state tournament, was the Great- er Valley Conference Player of the Year and a first team all-state selection at catcher for the second year in row. Selected baseball player of the year at the June 4 Mid-Valley Sports Awards, Zavala will play collegiate baseball at Oregon. Here is a look at the All-Mid-Valley baseball team.
