Sprague senior Colby Evenson, South Salem senior Tyler Cook and Sprague junior Ian Shultz each had ca- reer seasons for their teams, and all three are the finalists for the Mid-Val- ley boys swimmer of the year. Evenson won a perfect four district championships and placed in the OSAA Class 6A state meet in all four events in which he competed, includ- ing a best of third in the 500 free. Shultz also won four district cham- pionships and placed in four events in the state meet with a best of third in the 100 breaststroke. Cook placed second in the Greater Valley Conference in four events and competed in the state meet in all four. The swimmer of the year winner will be presented at the June 4 States- man Journal Mid-Valley Sports Awards presented by Donofrio Dealer- ships at the Salem Convention Center. STATESMAN JOURNAL FILE Ein Carlos Pete Martini Salem Statesman Journal USA TODAY NETWORK A trio of Greater Valley Conference wrestlers put on quite a showing at OSAA state championships this sea- son, two of whom had done it before, and another who made a name for him- self on the biggest stage. North Salem’s Ein Carlos, Sprague’s Santos Cantu III and McKay’s David Rubio all won state titles, and they are finalists for Mid-Valley wrestler of the year. Carlos (152 pounds) and Cantu (195 pounds) found their way to the top of the medal stand at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum once again, and Rubio gave the Royal Scots’ wrestling program its first state champion since 2003. The winner will be awarded at the Statesman Journal Mid-Valley Sports Awards, presented by Donofrio Dealer- ships, set for June 4 at the Salem Con- vention Center. Sprague sophomore Alexis Smith, West Salem senior Alaina Otterstrom and South Salem senior Anna Despain won a lot of races and set a lot of rec- ords. The three are the finalists for the All- Mid-Valley girls swimmer of the year. Otterstrom placed in the Greater Val- ley Conference district swimming meet in four events and swam in the Class 6A state meet in three. Despain continued her record-break- ing pace by winning three GVC district championships and placed in the state in four events as well as breaking nearly every South Salem school record. Smith established herself among the state’s elite by winning the GVC cham- pionship in the 100 free and placing fifth in the state meet in the 50 free and 100 free. The winner will be presented at the June 4 Statesman Journal Mid-Valley Sports Awards presented by Donofrio Dealerships at the Salem Convention Center.
