SILVERTONAPPEAL.COM ❚ WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 2018 ❚ 3B OBITUARIES IN BRIEF Cleo Marie (Skirvin) Christophersen Dec. 4, 1924 — Feb. 5, 2018 Cleo Marie (Skirvin) Christophersen passed away peacefully just after midnight on Feb. 5, 2018, at West- minster at Lake Ridge in Lake Ridge, Virginia, her resi- dence for the past 14 years. Surrounded by friends and family in her final days, Cleo was a dedicated, loving mother who enjoyed traveling, gardening and family gatherings. Born on Dec. 4, 1924, in Scotts Mills, Cleo grew up in and around Marquam, Cleo where she and her 11 siblings helped on the family farm. Along with her older Christoph- ersen sisters Ruth and Elsie, Cleo also cared for the younger children until she moved to Seattle. There she met and married her hus- band, Raymond Christophersen of Ballard, Washing- ton, who died in 1997 shortly after their 50th wedding anniversary. While raising their son, Eric, they en- joyed traveling around the Pacific Northwest and to Hawaii. In 2003, Cleo moved to Virginia, where she loved to visit her son, his wife Donna, her six grandchildren, their spouses, and one great-grandchild: James (Ka- tie) Christophersen and their daughter Pia Bernadette of Arlington, Virginia; Paul (Dani) Christophersen of Riverside, Alabama; Peter Christophersen of Waialua, Hawaii; and John, Sarah, and Sam Christophersen of Fairfax Station, Virginia. Cleo was preceded in death by her parents, Enoch and Gertrude (Kyllo) Skirvin, and siblings Ruth (Fo- gelberg), Elsie (Rivenes), Carl, Walter, Florence (Howe), Rose (Fishe) and Ione (Gersch). In addition to her immediate family, Cleo is survived by two broth- ers, Paul and Charles, and two sisters, Deborah (Weaver) and Diane (Johnson), along with their spouses and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life was held at Grace Bible Church in Lorton, Virginia, on Feb. 15, followed by a service of commitment at Evergreen-Washelli Ceme- tery in Seattle, Washington, on March 4. David Wilbur Havens April 11, 1930 — Feb. 22, 2018 David Havens, 87, passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, at Providence Benedictine. Dave was born in Boise, Idaho, on April 11, 1930, to Vern and Hazel (Cris- well) Havens. He was one of four chil- dren and was raised and attended local schools in Fairfield, Idaho. In 1946, he left home and, with the help of a stranger vouching for his age, he enlisted in the Army at the age of 15. David Havens As a paratrooper of the 1st Airborne, he Seniors Continued from Page 2B this season, but went 12-2 in league play to win the Mid-Willamette Conference. Roth was named confer- ence player of the year, and McCarty and Schmitz were selected second team all-conference. It’s a team that relies on aggressive man-to-man defense, a trademark of Wold’s teams at Silverton. That was evident in Friday’s game against Hermiston with a berth in the state tournament on the line. Silverton struggled offensively in the first half and led 15-14 at the break. Three-pointers by Schmitz, McCarty and Roth keyed an 11-2 run to close the third quarter and the Foxes increased their lead to 31-20. Silver Falls Library hosts birthday bash for Dr. Seuss was stationed in Italy at the end of WWII. He stayed in the Army for three years, honorably discharging in 1949. Finding work in those days was difficult and af- ter a short stint working on a railroad crew in Mon- tana, he decided to re-enlist, this time with the Navy as a submariner. As sometimes happens, plans and reality don’t meet. The Navy was not expanding the submarine ranks, but in the same recruiting office was a very helpful and persuasive Marine recruiter. Dave was convinced to join the Marines and as it turned out, the Marines suited him. He became a Gunnery Sergeant leading a machine gun crew on the USS Philippine Seas Aircraft Carrier during the Kore- an War and was there at the Inchon landing. He prob- ably would have stayed in the Marines except for meeting Betty. While on leave, Dave was introduced to Betty Rob- ertson by his cousin Stuart and Betty’s brother Bill. After a few dates, Dave returned to service and they were separated for a year. He returned from service to re-kindle their romance. They were married on July 26, 1953, and Dave left the Marines in January 1954. Their family grew to include five children: David (1954), Mary (1956), Daniel (1957), John (1959) and Elizabeth (1961). Their civilian life together began in Boise Idaho, where Dave was a policeman, a carpenter and, even- tually, a heavy construction equipment master me- chanic. His 38-year career in construction took Dave, Betty, and the family all over the Northwest. From Boi- se to Blue River and Sweet Home, Oregon, on to Gold- endale, Mossyrock, and Grand Coulee, Washington, they followed various construction projects until set- ting down roots in Lake Oswego. When the kids were grown and on their own, he and Betty again took to the road working on projects across Oregon, California and Nevada. His last project was managing the heavy equipment fleet for a gold mine operation in Elko, Nevada. Dave retired from construction in 1992 and returned to Oregon, settling down in Mt Angel. In retirement, Dave pursued his life-long passion for woodworking, building his own shop and then crafting all sorts of furniture and wood projects for his family. He loved ocean fishing, crabbing and occa- sionally gambling at the casino. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings and son David, who tragically died at the age of 2 from leu- kemia. Dave is survived by his wife, Betty; children Mary (Robert) Childs of Tualatin, Daniel (Sherrie) of Oregon City, John (Cheryl) of Wilsonville and Eliza- beth (Rocky) Johnson of Salem; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, March 9, at St. Mary Catholic Church of Mt. Angel, with rosary preceding at 10:30 a.m. Arrangements with Unger Funeral Chapel of Mt. Angel. The front of Silverton’s warmups reads: The Blue- print. It's a plan for success that includes teamwork, communication and maintaining a positive attitude. Does Silverton have what it takes to reach a third consecutive state championship game? “We’re gonna battle our tails off,” McCarty said. ghorowitz@StatesmanJournal.com or Twit- ter.com/ghorowitz Public Notices are published by the Statesman Journal and available online at w w w .S ta te s m a n J o u r n a l.c o m .
