2A ❚ WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2018 ❚ APPEAL TRIBUNE OBITUARIES Harold Nielsen Harold “Hal” Nielsen of Silverton left this earth Dec. 23 after a six-week effort to recover from a stroke. He was 87 years of age. Hal is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters Mina, Christina and Re- Harold becca; son Eric; three Nielsen grandsons; his sister, Li- ly; as well as he and Car- ol’s beloved extended family. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kath- erine; sister Marie; and brother Arnold. Hal was born in 1930 and raised in Fortuna, California. He attended Oregon State University for three years and, af- ter serving in the Army during the Kore- an War, graduated from California State University, Chico. He then taught high- school Industrial Arts, Drafting, and Al- gebra for thirty years while living in Au- burn, California, where he raised his family. His first wife, Kathy, passed away in 2002. A devout Lutheran, Hal lived true to his faith and its teachings, serving others and helping those in need whenever he could. As an accom- plished pianist and organist, he often shared his musical gifts in churches and convalescent homes. Hal and his wife, Carol, enjoyed 14 1 ⁄ 2 years together, mak- ing their home in Silverton. Hal was a good, honorable man. A loving husband, father and grandfather. A caring son, brother, uncle and friend. A devoted teacher and mentor. A skilled gardener and craftsman, and a gifted musician. A man of steadfast faith. We will remember him for these things, and know that his was a life well lived. A local Remembrance Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at Sil- verton First Baptist Church, 229 West- field St. Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton. Ann Davenport Vasconi July 23, 1939 — Jan. 3, 2018 Ann Davenport Vasconi passed away on Jan. 3, 2018. Ann was born on July 23, 1939, to Henry and Eloise Daven- port of Silverton. She spent her early years on the family farm, raising and showing livestock and participating in 4-H. Ann She began teaching in the Vasconi early 1960s. In 1965, she was offered a teaching position at Tom Thumb Montessori School in Anchor- age, Alaska, which began her Alaskan adventure. There she met and married her husband, Samuel Vasconi, in 1969. While working and raising a family, she completed her education degree, which she received in 1971. She worked at Tom Thumb Montessori School until her re- tirement, enriching the lives of many children. Ann and her husband retired and re- turned to Oregon in 1983. After retiring, Ann developed a deep interest in family history. She joined the Mormon Family History Center in Corvallis in order to help others learn how to research their family history. She moved in 2014 to the Mt. Angel Towers, where she helped in the library and mini shop and served as President on the Resident Council. She loved to read and to travel, seeing many places during her lifetime. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel, and her brother, John Davenport III. Ann is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Todd Clark and Sandra and Patrick Morin; her grand- children Kathryn, Sarah and Makayla; her brother and sister-in-law Ken and Sharon Davenport; brother Earl Daven- port; nieces Tanya Kahn and Bobbi Tryon; and great nephews Alex and Tanner. She was a blessing to us all and will be missed greatly. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to a favorite charity in her name. Arrangements with Unger Funeral Chapel. Adelene Bochsler Hammelman June 9, 1923 — Jan. 7, 2018 Services were held Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Angel. Adelene was born June 9, 1923, in St. Paul and died Jan. 7, 2018, in Mt. Angel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Hammelman, and her daughters, Marylee Schaeffer and Diane Sowa. She was survived by her sons and their spouses, Fr. William Hammelman, Richard and Marilyn Hammelman, and Dan and Bernadette Hammelman; her sons-in-law, Joe Schaeffer and Bob So- wa; 14 grandchildren and 30 great- grandchildren. Angel Wurstfest, set for Feb. 9-10, is accompanied by a pair of fun runs. Runners can now register for 5K and 10K races, scheduled for the second day of the indoor festival, participants run through the streets of Mt. Angel and the surrounding countryside.
