He earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2010 from Parker Univer- sity in Dallas, Texas. Ort Chiropractic is at 436 McClaine Street, reachable by phone at 503-874-8678 or online at OrtChiropractic.com. Down the street, the McClaine House, in its highly visible location on the corner of Main and McClaine streets, has un- dergone a quiet transfor- mation of its own. Innkeeper Karen Choules bought the histor- ic home last summer and, with partner Andrew Halls, has transformed it from a single-family home into a two-suite bed- and-breakfast. The Falls Suite upstairs accommo- dates three guests, while the Terrace Suite on the main floor, accommo- dates another three, for a total of six at a time. Prices start at $170 per night and adjust upward seasonally. Choules came to Silver- ton by way of the tiny town of Carlton, Ore., where she operated the Carlton Inn, a bed-and- breakfast that accommo- dated up to nine guests in the heart of Yamhill Coun- ty’s wine country. Before that, she was an owner and aesthetician at a day spa in southern Califor- nia. Halls is an owner of Pa- cific Hazelnut Candy Fac- tory in Aurora. Thus, the inn is always stocked with a variety of chocolates and local wines for sale in the airy dining room where Choules serves guests a three-course breakfast. “I’m very happy to be in this community,” she said. “I just fell in love with it when I found it.” The McClaine House, a lovely Queen Anne style structure, has a rich local history, having been built in 1878 by “Jake” McClaine, one of Silver- ton’s most influential early citizens. He came to Silverton from Illinois, formed a business part- nership with Ai Coolidge and eventually started Coolidge & McClaine Bank. The building con- structed by their sons in 1922, now occupied by Cit- izens Bank, stands a few blocks down the street. Since buying and reno- vating the house, Choules said she’s been pleasantly surprised by how much historical information Sil- verton residents have of- fered up. “I’m amazed at how in- terested the locals have been with all that we are doing here. I think long- time Silverton residents feel a certain ownership and special interest in this house,” she said. Renovations over the last year have been exten- sive. Most obvious is the new paint – white and teal – outside, but the house’s wooden porches also re- quired repairs. An up- stairs bathroom, once a sleeping porch, was gut- ted and rebuilt. The downstairs great room, with its cherry-ac- cented fir floor, only re- quired a wax job on the floor but needed signifi- cant repairs to its lathe- and-plaster walls, includ- ing the removal of multi- ple layers of wallpaper. Now Choules is turning more of her attention to the landscaping, which she hopes to augment with a vegetable garden. The McClaine House is at 216 W. Main Street and is reachable by phone at 503-874-1878 or online at www.themcclainehouse- .com.
