STATE CHAMPIONS Stayton Highlights take Class 4A title for school’s 13th crown ANNETTE UTZ SPECIAL TO THE STAYTON MAIL T he Stayton Highlights dance team soared to their 13 th state dance championship in the Class 4A division on Saturday evening. For their program, entitled “Uncomfortably Comfortable,” they tallied a score of 91.32 out of 100 possible, leaving very little room for missteps. Second place was claimed by Valley Catholic, with a score of 90.95, and Scappoose scored 79.72 for the third place seat.. “I have never seen them dance better,” Highlights head coach Robin Meier said. “They definitely deserve this.” By comparison, Sheldon High School in Eugene won the Class 6A division with a 87.53 score. The Highlights’ program concerns a bird who must make the decision to remain with what is known or take a risk and test itself in the world. The Eagles ladies flew the coop early this year. They went into the Class 4A preliminary trials undefeated in the season. Not only did they emerge in first place in the initial go around with a score of 92.43, they also outscored the top Class 6A team, Lake Oswego, which scored 85.15.
