OBITUARIES
(Victor) Frank Wilson
June 2, 1948 — March 7,
2017
Born in
Clarksdale,
Mississip-
pi, to Her-
bert Wilson
and Bonnie
(Osborn)
Wilson, he
was christened Victor
Frank but was always
called Frank or Frankie.
The family moved to Cali-
fornia after losing a son
and two stillborn daugh-
ters, and hard times work-
ing in the cotton fields.
A few years later, they
moved to Oregon. Frank
attended grade schools in
Monitor and Scotts Mills,
and graduated from Sil-
verton High School in
1967. He attended com-
munity college at We-
natchee Valley and Lane
Community and earned
his associates degree in
law enforcement from
Chemeketa. He graduat-
ed with honors from the
Oregon Police Academy.
Frank married Penny
DeSantis from Silverton
on Feb. 6, 1971, and they
celebrated 46 years of
marriage. They lived in
Stayton for 33 years. They
were blessed to love and
to be loved by each other’s
families as their own.
They had three daugh-
ters: Cory and husband
Henry DeHaan, Kelly
Wilson, and Holly and hus-
band Matthew Norman;
grandchildren Victoria
Rain Williams, Jesse Wil-
son, Maddalyn Wilson, Za-
chery Wilson and Cosmo
Norman; and great grand-
children: Zeven and Ath-
en Williams.
Frank’s careers includ-
ed time as a Silverton Po-
lice Officer and time with
Stayton Septic Service &
Stayton Construction. His
loves included his family,
storytelling, slow pitch
softball, hunting and fish-
ing.
He retired in 2005 after
a motor vehicle accident
involving a drunk driver,
which left him with quad-
riplegia for the last 12
years. He passed away
peacefully at home with
his family. He was an
amazing person who was
loved beyond measure.

Doris Drake Crabtree
March 23, 1923 — March 2,
2017
On
Thursday,
March 2,
Doris Crab-
tree died
peacefully,
just three
weeks shy
of her 94th birthday.
Doris was born and
raised in Portland, where
she lived until moving to
Corvallis to attend col-
lege. She graduated from
Oregon State in 1945 with
a bachelor’s degree in sec-
retarial sciences.
She married David
Crabtree in 1948. They
moved to Vancouver,
Washington. In 1969, they
moved to Silverton. Doris
worked as a legal secre-
tary for Dennis Bean until
she was diagnosed with
MS in 1978. David died in
1998. A few years later she
met Robert Nelson, who
became her longtime love
and companion. Robert
preceded her in death in
2010. Doris enjoyed many
years of traveling with
both David and Robert.
Survivors
include
daughters Pamela Crab-
tree of Carmel, Califor-
nia, and Wendy McCar-
ley-Bentley of San Felipe,
Baja, Mexico; grandson
Christopher Gilson of Sal-
sha, Alaska; granddaugh-
ters Tara Gilson of Trout-
dale and Andrea Hart-
mann of Aledo, Texas; 10
great-grandchildren; and
Patricia Jensen of Silver-
ton, Robert Nelson’s
daughter who became
like a daughter to Doris.
A memorial service
will be held at 2 p.m.
March 20 at the Silverton
Senior Center, 115 West-
field St. in Silverton

Fr. Eugene Esch,
O.S.B.
Jan. 31, 1928 — March 2,
2017
Fr. Eu-
gene (Ray-
mond)
Esch, monk
of the Mon-
astery of
the Ascen-
sion in Je-
rome, Idaho, died March
2, 2017.
He was born in Mt. An-
gel, son of Frank and Hil-
da Esch. He was prede-
ceased by brothers Elmer,
Clarence and Raphael,
and is survived by nine
nieces and nephews.
He entered Mt. Angel
Seminary in 1945, entered
Mt. Angel Abbey in 1948
and was ordained a priest
in 1957.
Fr. Eugene earned a
MA in mathematics from
Santa Clara University in
1969. He worked as a
mathematics teacher at
both
Kennedy
High
School and Mt. Angel
Seminary.
In 1971, he became a
founding member of the
Benedictine monastery in
Twin Falls, Idaho. The
small community served
as a center for Catholic
students attending the
College of Southern Ida-
ho. In 1980 the communi-
ty, known as the Priory,
moved to its present loca-
tion east of Jerome, Idaho.
Fr. Eugene physically as-
sisted in the construction
of the new Priory, served
as supply purchaser,
bookkeeper and head gar-
dener. He excelled in his
gardening and regularly
collected blue ribbons at
county fairs.
Fr. Eugene’s priestly
ministry took him to vari-
ous locations in the Dio-
cese of Boise. He served
as chaplain to the sisters
at Marymount Hermitage
from 1987 to 1995, and as
parish priest in Glenns
Ferry 1995 to 2012, where
he retired, returning to
the Monastery of the As-
cension in Jerome.
Funeral Mass for Fr.
Eugene was held at St. Je-
rome Catholic Church in
Jerome on March 11, 2017.
Shirley Anne Russell
She was
born to Wil-
liam
and
Edith (Mc-
Donald)
Schwarz
and was a
graduate of Silverton
High School, where she
met Ronald William Rus-
sell, her high school
sweetheart. They were
married June 6, 1959, and
together had three chil-
dren: Scott, Gregg and
Gail.
Shirley was a lifelong
member of Immanuel Lu-
theran Church in Silver-
ton. She was a devoted
mother and homemaker,
and managed the family
hazelnut farms through-
out her life. Her hobbies
included flower garden-
ing, landscaping, bird
watching and reading.
Shirley took special care
to be involved with her
grandchildren and en-
joyed attending their
school
and
sporting
events.
Shirley is survived by
sons Scott (Rachael) and
Gregg (Stephanie) Rus-
sell; daughter Gail (Steve)

Deputies with the Mar-
ion County Sheriff’s Of-
fice assisted rescue per-
sonnel from the Silverton
Fire District, Mt. Angel
Fire District and the Sa-
lem Fire Department af-
ter a 16-year-old girl fell
nearly 80 feet while on a
hike Saturday with her
family on the Abiqua
Trailhead.
Hikers on the trail
came to the aid of the
teenager and provided
medical attention until
rescuers could arrive, at
about 4 p.m. When rescu-
ers arrived they were
hampered by steep ter-
rain and wet conditions. A
specialized rope rescue
team from the Salem Fire
Department was called to
assist in the rescue.
At 8:42 p.m., the teen-
ager was carried out of
the canyon and taken by
dren; and her mother,
Edith Schwarz. She is pre-
ceded in death by her hus-
band, Ronald, and father,
William Schwarz.
A graveside service
will be held at 1 p.m. Sat-
urday, March 18, at Valley
View Cemetery. A memo-
rial service will follow at 2
p.m. at Immanuel Luther-
an Church in Silverton.
