Stella Marion Beyer
July 22, 1928 — Feb. 26, 2017
Stella Beyer of Mt. An-
gel was born to Andrew
and Margaret Dummer in
New Ulm, Minnesota, on
July 22, 1928. Her family
subsequently moved to
Mt. Angel, where she at-
tended school and gradu-
ated from Mt. Angel Women’s College
with a degree in education.
In 1952, she married Vincent Beyer
and moved to the farm on Oster Road
near Monitor, where they enjoyed 55
years of raising berries, cattle, trees,
and children. Stella was an avid home-
maker and excelled in sewing, cooking,
quilting, square dancing and had a love
for music and St. Mary’s Church that she
shared with her children. After the chil-
dren were raised, she enjoyed volks-
walking, gardening, antiquing and
spending time with her family.
Stella is survived by her children: Da-
vid (Rita) Beyer of Woodburn, Mary
(Jose) Parra of Woodburn, Stephen (Les-
lie) Beyer of Portland, Mark (Gayla)
Beyer of Oregon City, Janice (John) Wal-
ters of Portland, Leo (Edna) Beyer of Fal-
lon, Nevada, Bruce Beyer of Canby and
Alan Beyer of Beaverton; 16 grandchil-
dren; eight great-grandchildren; sib-
lings Art (Joan) Dummer, Francis (Ber-
nice) Dummer, Bill (Arlene) Roden-
hurst, Fr. Tony Dummer, OMI, and Carl
(Kathy) Dummer.
She was preceded in death by her hus-
band, Vincent Beyer, and her sister, Mar-
garet Hagman.

Patricia Sue (Roth) Fritz
Jan. 2, 1954 — Feb. 27, 2017
Patricia was born in Sil-
verton to Raymond and
Rosalie Roth and was
raised on a small farm out-
side of Salem. Her life was
cut short by ALS (Lou
Gehrig’s Disease). She
graduated from Salem
Academy High School in 1972 and from
Oregon State University with a degree in
Early Childhood Education in 1976.
She worked as a preschool teacher, an
educational assistant, and for 23 years as
an instructional assistant at Sublimity
Elementary School. In 2007, she was hon-
ored by the North Santiam School Dis-
trict with the educator of the year award.
On March 20, 1976, she married Luke
Fritz. Together they lived in Salem and
Aumsville before finally moving to six
acres between Aumsville and Sublimity
in 1982. She gave birth to three children,
all of whom became teachers: Alicia, in
Salem; Kara, in Hillsboro; and Josiah,
near Christmas Valley.
Pat was raised in the Emmanuel Men-
nonite Church in Pratum, and was a
member of the Stayton United Methodist
Church, serving as a Sunday School
teacher for more than 30 years. She lived
her faith with the grace for which she
was noted. She also expressed her artis-
tic talents through sewing, knitting, cro-
cheting, a wide variety of arts, crafts and
cooking.
A memorial service was held March 4
at Stayton United Methodist Church.
Donations may be made in her name
to the ALS Association, Doernbecher
Children’s Hospital or Stayton United
Methodist Church.

Dorothy LaJean Canoy
(Huddleston)
Oct. 14, 1928 — Feb. 24, 2017
Dorothy LaJean Canoy passed away
peacefully in her home on Feb. 24, 2017,
with her daughter, son-in-law and grand-
daughter at her bedside.
She was born to Allen and Della Hud-
dleston (Brackett) and was a graduate of
Silverton High School. She married
Boyd Taylor Canoy on Labor Day 1937,
and is preceded in death by him (April
20, 2005).
Dorothy owned a Beauty Shop in Sil-
verton for several years and lived there
with their daughter while Boyd served in
the Army in Italy during World War II.
After the war, they lived in several com-
munities in Oregon following Boyd’s em-
ployment in the lumber industry. After
retirement, they settled in Vancouver,
living near their daughter for 39 years.
In retirement, they traveled extensively.
They spent time in Europe, including
France and Italy, Turkey, Egypt, Japan
and China.
Hobbies included gardening, bird
watching, reading, knitting, crocheting
and helping raise her great-grandchil-
dren.
She is survived by her daughter, Ellen
(Robert) Hehn; grandchildren Boyd
(Anne) Hehn, Curtis (Karina) Hehn,
Alyssabeth Segers (Ryan Graham); and
eight great-grandchildren: Alexandra
and Madeleine Tallent Hehn, Katia,
Alexis and Connor Hehn, Jacob Graham
and Alyssa and Tristin Segers.
“Nanny” is greatly missed. We are in-
debted to Peace Health Hospice for their
loving and caring support in Nanny’s fi-
nal days.
A graveside service was held March 3
at Miller Cemetery in Silverton.
Arrangements were made with Un-
ger Funeral Chapel, Silverton.

city manager will continue

The city of Mt. Angel has begun a
second round of recruitment to find an
assistant city manager.
The first round of interviews on Jan.
24 resulted in a candidate pool of four
people. In-person interviews on Feb. 7
culminated in the city offering the job
to a candidate, who declined the offer.
Staff reopened the application process
and began reviewing the newest sub-
missions on March 1.

High school musicians
hit just the right note

Young musicians in the Silverton area
looking to take flight recently got a boost
from high-schoolers who took them un-
der their wing at a one-day band clinic.
Section leaders and other musicians
in Silverton High School’s bands spent
Saturday, Feb. 25 mentoring younger
students from six local schools. Fifteen
high schoolers gave instrument-specific
training and played alongside 36 young-
er musicians in this first annual band
clinic.
Clinic leaders’ goals were to provide
young musicians with tools and tech-
niques to support musical development,
give them experience in advanced
sounds and ensembles, and give them a
chance to perform alongside advanced
students, said Frank Petrik, band direc-
tor.
“It was a pleasure to work with atten-
tive and talented young musicians. It
gave the leadership a clear perspective
of the future of our program,” he said.
Student leaders from the high school
included Marah Christenson, Melissa
Mattison, Maggie Kelley, Julie Golan,
Will Sisley, Sam Goggin and Noah West-
gate. To prepare them for this and other
roles, they attended leadership training
at the beginning of the year, Petrik said.
