Rick
Miller was
born July 8,
1964,
in
Taft, Cali-
fornia, to
Sue
and
Richard
Miller. On Saturday, Jan.
7, 2017, a beautiful and
kind heart stopped beat-
ing and hard working
hands found rest when his
battle with leukemia end-
ed.
Rick graduated from
Taft High School in 1982
and spent most of his
youth working in the oil
industry. He was creative
and passionate about
learning, taking pride in
sharing his experiences
and skills. It was his na-
ture to help and share
with those around him.
With Daniel, Rick
dreamt of, opened, and
ran for 17 years a hugely
successful
nightclub,
“The Casa Blanca,” in Ba-
kersfield, California. Rick
enjoyed that success, but
dreamt of the mountains.
They left the fast-paced
lifestyle to settle in the
foothills of the Cascades
above Silverton in July
2005. It was in their beau-
tiful art deco, country, Bo-
gart inspired home that
Rick spent his last days
surrounded by the snow
covered trees and the rip-
pling creek that he so
loved.
Rick is survived by his
best friend and partner of
26 years, Daniel R. (Reed)
Miller. He is also survived
by his loving mother, Sue
Clinton; brother Danny
Frye; and four nephews
and nieces, all from Taft,
California.
A celebration of life is
planned for May 27 at the
couple’s home in Silver-
ton. At that time, his fam-
ily and friends will be in-
vited to share memories
and stories. Donations are
suggested to the Cancer
and Leukemia Societies.

SPECIAL TO THE APPEAL TRIBUNE
Three years after larg-
er-than-life community
advocate Judy Schmidt
helped cut the ribbon
opening Silverton’s skate
park – and two years after
her death – a new memori-
al now stands onsite.
The Judy Schmidt Me-
morial Skate Park, so
named by the city council
two years ago, is now
graced with a bronze
plaque and bench, memo-
rializing the woman who
was one of its biggest ad-
vocates. A city councilor
and devoted local volun-
teer, Schmidt died sud-
denly in 2014 of Creuzt-
felt-Jacob Disease.

of installing the podium

effort. The Silver Fox

bench.
The bad weather on
Jan. 9 broke long enough
for a small audience to
watch the memorial’s un-
veiling, following a series
of short speeches at the
Senior Center. Among the
crowd were Schmidt’s
family, chamber repre-
sentatives and city lead-
ers, as well as local busi-
ness owner Jason Franz,
who worked with Schmidt
and others to make the
park a reality.
