Appeal Tribune Wednesday, November 16, 2016 3B A look at local legislative election results JUSTIN MUCH APPEAL TRIBUNE A couple of rural dis- tricts saw incumbents holding their seats: House District 18 incumbent Vic Gilliam, Silverton, defeat- ed Clackamas County Democrat Tom Kane; in- cumbent Republican Sherrie Sprenger beat In- dependent Jeffrey Good- win in House District 17, which includes Detroit, Gates, Idanha, Lebanon, Lyons, Mill City, Scio, Stayton, Sublimity, Sweet Home and Waterloo. Two rural Mid-Valley Oregon Senate seats on the ballot this cycle ap- peared squarely de- fended by Republican in- cumbents. Results show Fred Gi- rod won over Democrat Rich Harisay in District 9 Gilliam Kane Boquist Hack Nearman Thompson east of the Willamette River, while Republican Brian Boquist won with a comfortable lead over Democratic challenger Ross Swartzendruber in District 12, which is most- ly west of the River. Republican incumbent Jodi Hack won House Dis- trict 19, which serves sec- tions of south Salem, Tur- ner, Aumsville and rural areas south and east of Sa- lem. Woodrow Edward Billups Woody’s life took place Nov. 12 at the Silverton Elks Lodge. Cookie was remem- bered with a celebration of life Nov. 13 at the Salem Armory. Another service will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 20 at Silvercrest School at Drakes Crossing. Hack is seeking her second term. Rural House District 23 featured a race be- tween an incumbent and former incumbent; Re- publican State Rep. Mike Nearman had a strong lead over former Rep. Jim Thompson, who chal- lenged Nearman as an In- dependent. OBITUARIES Otto Joseph Erwert Jan. 15, 1928 — Nov. 7, 2016 Otto Jo- seph Er- wert was born Jan. 15, 1928, on the family farm be- tween Mt. Angel and Woodburn to Joseph and Katherine (Laschober) Erwert. Af- ter graduating from Mt. Angel Prep he entered the United States Army. After being honorably dis- charged he farmed until the late 1960s, when he be- came a school bus driver and groundskeeper for the Woodburn School Dis- trict until his retirement. Otto was an active life- long member of St. Mary’s Parish. Otto was a mem- ber of the Catholic Order of Foresters and a past Adjutant for the Mt. An- gel American Legion Post 89. Otto’s main enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren, visit- ing the Oregon Coast, and country drives. Otto married Patricia Marie Ditter on Sept. 5, 1950. Patricia preceded Otto in death on Sept. 21, 2007. They were married for 57 years. Otto and Marie had two children who survive them, Kathy (Ron) Schmidt of West Linn and Ron (Carole) Erwert of Al- buquerque, New Mexico. Also surviving are two grandchildren, David Er- wert of Charleston, South Carolina, and Jonathan (Caitlin) Erwert of Albu- querque, New Mexico. Recitation of the Rosa- ry was held Nov. 12 at Mt. Angel Towers. Funeral Mass was held Nov. 14 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Angel. Interment is at a Calvary Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Calvary Cemetery c/o St. Mary Parish. Arrangements by Un- ger Funeral Chapel, Mt. Angel. Gwendolyn Jean (Lundeen) Barritt June 29, 1941 — Nov. 5, 2016 Gwen was born in Minnesota, the daugh- ter of Mar- tha (Bugge) and Harry Lundeen. Her family moved in 1949 to Silver- ton, where she attended Bethany Grade School and graduated from Sil- verton Union High. Her parents built Lundeen’s Grocery in Bethany near their home. Following high school, Gwen went to beauty school and then worked in Lake Oswego for a time. She met Harlan “Whitey” Barritt and they married while he was in the ser- vice. To this union they had a daughter, Angellyn. Together, Gwen and Whit- ey moved to San Diego and later returned to Sa- lem, where they both worked and managed Kir- by Vacuums for several years. Gwen enjoyed playing piano, flower gardening and painting. Gwen is preceded in death by her parents and Whitey. She is survived by her daughter, Angie Ur- ben, and son-in-law Brad- ley Croucher; grandsons Eric Urben and Marcus Croucher; granddaughter Jennifer Urben; four great-grandchildren; and numerous friends and ex- tended family. Graveside services will take place at Valley View Lutheran Cemetery in Silverton at a later date. Arrangements by Un- ger Funeral Chapel. Jan. 31, 1935 — Nov. 4, 2016 Wood- row Ed- ward Bil- lups passed away Nov. 4, 2016. He was born in California on Jan. 31, 1935, the son of Leon- ard Leslie Billups and Ma- ry Ray Groseclose. He moved to Oregon with his parents and siblings, re- siding in Rockaway on the coast, where Leonard and Mary owned rental cot- tages. Woody hung around an arcade at Rockaway Beach all the time when he was a kid. The owner, Victor P. David, showed him how to fix the old pen- ny machines that he had there. Vic finally took him under his wing and moved him to the valley to work on his equipment there. Woody graduated from Silverton High School, and afterward worked full-time in Vic’s business. Woody married Zona Bee- man and together had one child, Edward. They later divorced and he married Lila (Penn) Schiavone. Li- la worked with Woody and eventually they bought the business from Vic Da- vid. Woody was a charter member of the Silverton Elks Lodge and a member of the Army National Guard, where he served as radio maintenance per- sonnel. Woody served 20- plus years in the Army National Guard. He is survived by his wife, Lila Billups; ex-wife Zona Beeman; son and daughter-in-law Ed and Joeleen Billups; sisters Zella Gibbons and Eva An- drews; brother Richard Billups; and stepchildren Janet Noble and Dwayne Schiavone. A celebration of Estelle Cynthia “Cookie” Parker Kent Aug. 8, 1957 — Oct. 5, 2016 Estelle Cynthia “Cookie” Parker Kent was born Aug. 8, 1957, to James Henry “Honey” Parker and Don- na Jean Parker in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She lost her valiant fight with can- cer on Oct. 5, 2016. The youngest of two children, Cookie graduat- ed from South Side High School in 1975. She was an excellent athlete and played basketball, volley- ball, and ran track. She earned her BA in Social Science from Ball State University in 1979. After graduation, she eventual- ly made her way to South- ern California, where she worked for Hostess as a truck driver, then Knud- sen Dairy where she met Michael Kent. Mike relo- cated to Oregon and Cook- ie followed several months later. They were married in 1991 at South Lake Tahoe. Soon after Cookie secured a job as a corrections officer where she reached the rank of Lieutenant and was em- ployed for 25 years. Cookie was an adven- turous person, and was happy to try most any- thing, especially with Mike. She liked to travel, and every year in March they spent a week in Mex- ico. She traveled to Greece and Hawaii, and went on train trips to Cali- fornia and Nevada. She panned for gold, was an expert marksman, and loved her dogs. One of her favorite pastimes was " "- # #& && '#,& /#+& "- #! May 25, 1928 — Nov. 4, 2016 Dorine, 88, passed away peacefully at Mt. An- gel Towers, surrounded by family. Dorine was born in Pierz, Minnesota, to Leo and Loretta Duerr. She lived most of her life in the Mt. Angel-Silverton area, where she farmed with her husband, Mau- rice. Gardening was her passion; always surround- ing herself with beautiful flowers. She loved to bake and was well known for her great pies and home- made bread. Dorine was preceded in death by her loving hus- band of 68 years, Maurice, and her sisters, Dolores Duerr and Erna Kasper. Survivors include sisters Viola Kollen, Esther Messer, Sharon Kadell and Barb Nibler; brother Abbot Gregory Duerr; and many beloved nieces and nephews. They relocated frequently because of John’s work, and were able to enjoy living in and meeting people in many states. She moved to Silverton eight years ago to be near family. She enjoyed knit- ting baby hats for the Sil- verton Hospital Birthing Center and loved garage sales. Laura Jean is survived by her daughter, Vicki Mohler (Robert) of Silver- ton; son John Woodhead (Lisa Han) of Kennewick, Washington; grandchil- dren Cynthia Carter, Tana Keathley, Erin Maloney, Laura Baker, Debra Woodhead, John Wood- head and April Woodhead; eight great-grand chil- dren; and sister Carol Ser- pa (Duane) of Gilbert, Ari- zona.
