Festivalgoers brave the rain during the 51st Mount Angel Oktoberfest on Saturday. The four-day festival, which celebrates the harvest, features live music, Bavarian-style food and beer.

fered booths with elephant ears, meat-
balls, cobbler, and German sausage with
onion and sauerkraut spilling off the
sides. Chris Bischoff, president of Okto-
berfest, said the rain didn’t stop visitors
from grabbing a pint of German beer
and indulging in German delights.
Bischoff said he estimates roughly
350,000 visitors will attend the four-day
celebration, which is 50,000 less than last
year.
“I think that because Oktoberfest is
only 4 days out of the year, it would take
more than a little rain to keep some of
our faithful patrons from coming,” Bis-
choff said. More than 80 craft and art
booths lined East College Street, selling
everything from hand puppets to hand-
painted Ukrainian eggs.
Joyce Church, a Silverton resident,
helped men and women of all ages find
the floral crown that best suited their
style in her booth, which was bursting
with flowers and leaves.
Church, who has participated in Okto-
berfest for 28 years, said the crowns are
a celebration of the end of harvest sea-
son.
“We sell about 1,200 at least an Okto-
berfest weekend,” Church said. “It
wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without them.”
It also might not be a true Oktoberfest
without beer, said Sean McGuire, the
sales manager for Point Blank Distribut-

in the beer garden.
As of 4 p.m. Saturday, 20 kegs of beer
had been consumed, McGuire said.
“So at about 105 pints in each keg, that
would be about 20,000 pints,” McGuire
said. “It’s been awesome. People come
and they want to drink.”
Sixteen beer taps lined the Biergar-
ten, but beer was flowing in every venue.
Portland resident Tris Masterson-
Miller can’t drink beer, but said Oktober-
fest isn’t all about alcohol.
“I like the fact that people of all ages
come - it can be for families, it can be for
younger people, older people,” Master-
son-Miller said. “I enjoyed last year and
seeing all the older German couples
dressed up and stuff, and it made me
want to come back this year.”
