Last year, 12,123 acres
were burned, all in Mar-
ion County. ODA esti-
mates local communities
were impacted by smoke
for eight of the 25 days
field burning took place.
State law requires
farmers to post flaggers
and signs when they burn
near roads, but ODA
found that doesn’t always
happen.
The department issued
five letters of warning –
and one notice of non-
compliance to a repeat of-
fender – for the six inci-
dents since 2012. It has not
issued any fines for traf-
fic incidents.
During the past six
years, ODA also has cited
14 farmers for illegal
stack burning, burning
without a permit, burning
past the “fire out” time,
and allowing a field burn
to escape and cause a
wildfire. It has fined three
of those farmers.

tions this project has for
the school.
“What it means for
Stayton athletics is that
we no longer have to rent
a field to play on when
post-season soccer rolls
around. It means our foot-
ball team won’t host a
play-off game in the mud
this year,” Shryock said.
“But what it really
means is that our field will
now reflect the kind of
school SHS is becoming,”
he continued. “As a
school, we have worked
extremely hard to raise
standards and expecta-
tions for our staff and stu-
dents while developing
rapport with the students
to make Stayton one of the
elite schools in the valley.
Our field will now reflect
that same mindset.
“In one sense, the field
was not necessary; we
could still play on the old
field and muddle through.
In another sense, it was
very necessary. The

school’ to attend for high
school kids just like our
new turf will be ‘the place’

School) echoed that senti-
ment in speaking of the
new McGinnis Field.
“More user groups will
have access to it and it will
be open year round,” he
said. “The kids are excit-
ed and the field color and
design is beautiful. Kids
are proud call the field
‘theirs.’ We have in-
creased options and use of
our outdoor space. It was
very complex and beauti-
fully done. This is defi-
nitely something Silver-
ton has not done before.
There are a lot of folks
without whom this would
have been possible.”
Stayton Booster Club
President Randy Forrette
summed up these devel-
opments as being more
than merely school im-
provements. Talking of
the Stayton High School
work, his words extend to
both schools in realizing a
long-time dream.
“It’s been a lot of work
and there’s a lot still to do
but what this project has
really done is to bring the
school and the community
together,” he said. “There
are huge advantages for
everyone and it’s been
amazing the momentum
we have achieved through
team efforts.”

Free was arrested Tues-
day on the assault charges
and for failing to register
as a sex offender. He was
taken to Marion County
jail, held on $60,000 and la-
belled a flight risk. On
Wednesday, he was ar-
raigned on a fourth-de-
gree assault charge.
His next hearing is
scheduled for Sept. 1 at
8:30 a.m. at the Marion
County Circuit Court An-
nex.

general fund dollars, but
did partner in the project
with monies that have ac-
cumulated over time
from work that the dis-
trict did with the Oregon
Department of Energy
and large Oregon busi-
nesses in the Energy Tax
Credit program. This
money was released for
general purposes this
summer.
