Silverton remembers Larry Kassell
Memorial services were held this
week for Silverton artist Larry Kassell,
who died June 11.
Kassell was born July 11, 1944. He at-
tended North Salem High School, then
enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After four
years of military service, he worked for
the State of Oregon Education Division
as a Graphic Artist, then in the States-
man Journal advertising department as
an ad designer. He served the Silverton
Appeal Tribune newspaper as Advertis-
ing Manager, and held some other jobs
before launching his own design, com-
mercial photography, publication de-
sign, and humorous illustration studio in
1976.
Kassell painted almost exclusively
with oils.
“Larry has been a featured artist in
the gallery for both solo shows and our
current ‘Featured Artist Showcase,”
wrote Steve and Barb Narkus, owners of
Elsinore Framing and Fine Art Gallery.
“For those of you who knew Larry, you
Larry Kassell
know about his talent as an artist as well
as his quirky sense of humor, which
came through in many of his paintings.
He will be missed by our family here at
the gallery.”
SPECIAL TO THE APPEAL TRIBUNE
Larry Kassell with his then-unfinished painting “There’s Gold in Those Hills.” It’s part of a show
at the Silverton branch of West Coast Bank.
OBITUARIES
Allen Edwin Ludden (Al)
Dec. 5, 1930 — June 21,
2016
Al Ludden of Silverton,
beloved husband of Becky
Ludden,
passed
into
peace, free of pain and the
confusion caused by Alz-
heimer’s. His final months
of care were by the loving staff at Sweet
Bye N Bye Memory Care in Salem.
Born in Seattle, Washington, Al grew
up in Hoquiam, Washington, until joining
the Navy in 1948. He had a 22 year career
in the military, 10 years Navy as a Kore-
an War Veteran, and 12 years Air Force
into the Vietnam era. His second career
was with the California Highway Patrol
for 28 years, retiring as an Inspector of
Automotive Equipment. With his me-
chanical knowledge and ability to work
well with personnel statewide, this was a
job he loved.
Al had a lifelong interest in anything
mechanical; ships, airplanes, cars, espe-
cially the Pan AM Clippers and the life-
style of that time. In retirement, he
trained and served as a docent at the
California Automobile Museum in Sac-
ramento.
He couldn’t remember life before
swimming, his favorite form of exercise.
Whether he was swimming 90 lengths of
the pool or scuba diving, he was happy in
the water, setting a standard for many,
much younger than him, to follow.
Moving from Sacramento to Silverton
eight years ago, he felt immediately wel-
come and at home. He enjoyed all the
people, seasons, and the beauty of the lo-
cal landscape. This community, who nev-
er knew him at his best, showed him so
much respect as the disease progressed.
Thanks to all for the love and support
over these past years.
Al is survived by his wife Becky,
grateful for fifteen joy filled years to-
gether, four children, two step children,
seven grandchildren, and a loving fam-
ily by marriage. At his request, there will
be no services. Arrangements are made
by Unger Funeral Chapel.
A Celebration of Life will be held at
the family home, Thursday, June 30 from
5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please plant
something in your own garden that
makes you feel happy. In his words, “I
think you should have one of each”.
