Jan. 21, 1916 — March 17,
2016
Ethel Selina Rose
passed into eternity on
March 17, 2016, at the age
of 100. Her family re-
joices that she is now with
her Savior Jesus Christ.
Ethel was born Jan. 21,
1916, to Lewis Tobias Si-
monson and Lene Oltina
(Gabrielson) Simonson.
Retirement may be far off,
but the April 18 deadline
for IRA contributions isn’t.
She grew up in McGrath,
Minnesota, along with her
nine brothers and three
sisters, all of whom are
deceased.
She married her child-
hood sweetheart, Merton
Clayton Rose, on Aug. 22,
1936, to whom she was
married 62 years before
Merton’s death on April 5,
1999. After their marriage
in Minnesota, they imme-
diately left for California,
where they resided for
several years before re-
turning to Minnesota to
try their hand at farming.
In 1947, they again re-
turned to California,
where Merton worked in
the construction trade
and Ethel was a full time
homemaker raising their
six children. In 1977, Ethel
and Merton moved to Sil-
verton for their retire-
ment years. After her hus-
band’s death, Ethel re-
turned to California,
where she lived for 13
years prior to moving
back to Silverton in 2014.
Ethel is survived by
her six children: Joan Car-
ol Rose of Aurora, Colora-
do, Judy Grubaugh of Ful-
lerton, California, Donna
Moberg of Hibbing, Min-
nesota, Charles L. Rose of
Silverton, Susan Camp-
bell of Athens, Ohio, and
Lewis C. Rose of Ana-
heim,
California;
16
grandchildren, 26 great-
grandchildren and one
great-great-granddaugh-
ter.
A celebration of Ethel’s
life was held in Silverton,
on her 100th birthday in
January of this year. 50 of
her closest family mem-
bers were present.

SILVERTON HOSPITAL
Miller, James Dustin: To Lisa
and Dusty Miller, Keizer, 8
pounds, March 9.
Who do I call fi rst?
When a death is unexpected and a person is not on hospice, nor in a licensed care facility, your fi rst phone call
may be to the funeral home. However, the police must be notifi ed fi rst. Often the funeral home will call and
notify the police for you.
Once police are notifi ed, they will come to the place of death and assess things. They will also contact EMT to
come and certify the time and that a death has occurred. Afterward, the police may phone the nearest funeral
home to assist in transportation of the individual. In certain cases, the medical examiner’s deputy may also
be requested at the scene to determine if an autopsy may be required. In other cases, an autopsy may not be
necessary. If family wishes to pursue an autopsy, they should notify the funeral
director.

Is embalming required?
Sublimity
No. Only in certain circumstances. Embalming is required in cases of
communicable disease or prolonged public viewing (6 hours or longer). Most
often times the funeral home will utilize mortuary refridgeration, as required after
the fi rst 24 hours of death.
