The Logging Congress whic
was held in Tacoma last summer
passed a resolution requesting
that the states of Oregon, Wash
ington. California, Idaho and
British Columbia provide courses
in the various universities in log'
ging engineering and to grant
degrees upon completion of such
courses. The proposed course
was taken up and discussed by
the regents of the Oregon Agri
cultural College at Corvallis and
was endorsed by them. It is pro
posed to establish this course for
the purpose of providing educa
. tion along the lines of logging
so that the logging business wil
be in the hands of competent
men. It is believed that logging
engineering ia a science that re
quires much study to successfully
carry on the business. The tim
ber industry in Oregon Is enor
mous, as the following figures
will prove: Standing timber in
Oregon.545.800.000.000 feet;value
on stump SC80.000.000; value when
manufactured. $6. 822, 500, 000;
value of output in 1912 was
$30,000,000, for which wages
were paid amounting to $14,000,
000, and supplies furnished
amounting to $10,000,000. With
this wonderful array of figures
based on accurate estimates and
figures. Representative Hagood
of Multnomah county has intro
duced a bill in the legislature
providing for a course in Logging
Engineering at the Agricultural
College and appropriating $Gf.000
for that purpose. Taking into
consideration the great wealth in
timber in Oregon, the great sums
paid for labor and supplies and
the further fact that at least 50
per cent of the entire taxes of
the state are paid by the timber,
it seems that the appropriation
should he made and that logging
engineering should become a
science,
A bill has been introduced in
the House at Salem bv Repre
sentative Hall of this county to
fix the salary of the School
Superintendent of Columbia Co.
at $1500 a year. There is no
doubt but that the bill is a good
pne so far as it goes, but inas
much, as, Mr, If all is going to pro
vide for the raise in the salary
of the superintendent from $i00
to $1500 a year, it Beems that
the other officers of the county,
who are also underpaid, should
be raised in like manner. The
offices of sheriff, clerk, assessor,
and treasurer are important and
the men who hold these posi
tions are entitled to more pay
than they are now getting. The
office of school superintendent is
qne of great importance to the
community and the incumbent is
entitled to a good salary, the
amount asked for in the bill of
Mr. Hall, but while he is in the
business why not adjust all the
salaries, and make them commen
surate with the services rendered.
to future offort. As a result of the
inspiration gained last year we hope
to have practically every one of the
125,000 school children of the state
engaged in some phase of the work
this year.
To those who did not get In
terested last year and are not fs
miliar with the rules of the contest
we wish to say that they are very
simple, The most important one Is
that the children must do the work
themselves and that the parent or
guardian will be required to sign a
statement to that effect. In raining
garden, someone else may plow the
ground and harrow it, but the child
must do .the rest the planting
cultivating, harvesting, etc. In
raising poultry the child does not
have to own the parent flock, but
must set the eggs and feed and care
for the chickens they exhibit.
One of the main objects of these
contents is to get the boys and girls
interested in doing something. To
teach them to do something practi.
cal, something worth while, some
thing by which they can earn a liv
ing when they grow up to manhood
and womanhood. And the only
way to learn how to do something
s to do that thing with your own
hands. If you show something that
omeone else has raised or made
you are cheating yourseir out ol
the most valuable part of the con
test the experience gained by do
ing it yourself.
Not only that, but in showing
something that Is not the product
f his own effort he Is practicing de
ception, cultivating dlnhodesty and
laying the foundation for a life of
dishonor and trouble. He may be
successful in deceiving others No
one buthimrelf and the members of
his own family may ever know that
he has cheated, but that is enough.
n doing what he knows is not right
he loses respect for himself, and
that is a long step In the wrong di
rection. When a person loses re
spect for himself he soon looses the
confidence and respect of others.
To thyself be true, and it follows
as the day follows night that no
ther man canst be false." Every
child should early in life get this
principle firmly fixed in his mind
and through life never depart from

PurcnU, don't think you are
favoring your child by giving or
aning him something to the fair
to win a prize with, for you are not.
On the other hand, you are doing
