In the dying hours of the congress
Just closed Senator Simmons of North
Carolina made a name for himself aa
the father of the first appropriation
for road building by the federal gov
ernment that haa been sisde since
Henry Clay made his sucessful fight
for the building of the old Cumberland
road. Senator Simmons' bill provides
for the expenditure of only $500,000.
and that for experimental work; but
the loo baa been broken now, and the
advocates of national highways con
structed by the national government
have taken new courage. The bill pro
vides for every dollsr expended in sny
community by the federal government

ed If your road doesn't reach perfec
tion in the first year. Keep everlast
ingly at It and later on you will be
glad.
Food for Poultry.
Poultry food ahould bo palatable.
Some grains are the favorite food of
rhlckena, while others are not Rye
may be fed, but It la not generally
liked by poultry, and should never be
made the principal feed. It may be
used In a mixture with other gralna.

Is one of the factors of proper feed
ing. Pood ahould be varied. The best
commercial poultry foods on the mar
ket are combinations of the common
farm gralna. There are varying
amounts of each, according to nutri
tive value and cheapnesa wheat,
oats, corn, barley, rye, millet seed,
raneseed. field peaa, buckwheat, sun
flowerseeds and grasaeeda. With
these are combined grit, shells and
charcoal. Theae foods produce good
results, mainly because of the va
riety. With a little Instruction, one
could make such a combination for
the flock of gralna on the farm.

Three years ago the farmers of
Spottsylvsnts county. Virginia, spent
$100,000 on good roada. Here la how
