N one is to blame for this
state of n 'lairs excej)t the j res
ent judicial system in ( tropin.
Jhere are two judges in this dis
trict who have all their time
' taken over the district and find
it almost impossible to expedite
matters
The jmhri'S niitfht possibly find
time to p't at these caes so that
men charged with crime could
1 hive a speedy trial accord injr to
the constitution, but with only
one district attorney trying to do
the busi ess of four large coun
ties, of v hich Columbia 19 the
smallest, following two judges
iround the circuit, with three
terms of court in Washinjrlon.
Clackamas and Clatsop counties
ami two t' lrns in Columbia, mak
Ing eleven terms each year, In
addition to the special terms held
by the j idvres: w ith all the grand
jury work to do as well as the'
trial of cases, civil and criminal, I
no man can doit. Our present1
district attorney handles hun-!
dreds of cast s a year, to say j
nothing of the Justice Court cas-;
ts and preliminary hearings,;
which are all looked after by!
Poorly l-aid deputies. j
It certainly is time something
was done to remedy this situa-!
ton. A hill was passed by the I
Iwt Legislature providing for a
Prosecuting attorney for each:
county, hut Governor West let;
the veto ax fall upon it, for some
reason. This law, if the govern
nor had permitted it to become a
law, would have relieved the sit
uation very largely, but it is not
a law.
A commission has been up-
P"inted by the Governor to get
UP a iie.v judicial code and it is
working no-.v and will probably
present a bill to the next l'tfis
lat itre changing the system fo
that when a man is charged with
a crime I,,., win Ket a trial before
me ci line u forgotten, nnd the
cunty will not bo under 'the
necessity f taking caro of a man
fr years before he is adj'.nlged

Indigestion
causes hcaithurn, sour
stomach, nervousness,
nausea, impure blood, and
more trouble than many l
different kinds of diseases.
The food you cat ferments
hi your stomach, and the
poisons it forms are ab
sorbed into your whole
system, causing many dis
tressing symptoms. At the
first sign of indigestion, try
E6J
Therjford's
Black-Draught
the old, reliable, vegetable
liver powder, to quickly
cleanse your system from
these undesirable poisons.
Mrs. Riley Laramore, of
Qoodwatcr, Mo., says: "I
suffered for years from dyspep
sia and heartburn. ThcdlorU's
Black-DraiiRht, in small doses,
cured my heartburn in a few
days, and now I can cat without
distress." Try it.
