lU n Selling of lVrtland has
nnimuneed his candidacy for the
United States Senate to succeed
Jonathan Bourne. Mr. Selling
is a successful business man in
Portland and has a w ide acquain
tance all over the State. He has
served in the State Senate from
Multnomah County, and was
President of the Senate at the
P.Hl session. By virtue of that
ollice he w as the acting Covernor
of the State for a few hours be
fore Cov. West was inaugurated.
As President of the Senate he
made a good record always
voting as he deemed Ix-st and
not with any particular fet of
men all tho way through, thus
demonstrating his freedom from
political factions. lis bnincss
aurcess and legislative experience
eminently tit him for the p .sition
of United States Senator and if
Jonathan Bourne can be defeated
Ben Selling can do it. However
this may be, Judge Bowell of
l.n.ll..ton must not be overlook
ed in this fight for he is in it to
stay and will have strong sup
port from certain portions 01
Eastern Oregon. He is also a
man well qualified for the po
sition and his candidacy and the
candidacy of Mr. Selling will
certainly conflict to such an ex
tent that Jonathan Bourne is not
likely to be displaced by cither
of them.
For the past two years it has j
been rumored that a ship yard
would U- established in St. Hel
ens and now that rumor has be-j
come a reality. The McCormick
l.umlter Co. and St. Helens Mill
Co. have already begun work on
the yards and it will be in active
ox ration within a few weeks.
What this means to St. Helens
can best be judged whtn it is
known that from M to T.jskilltd
men will be working continuous-,
ly there and thousands of feet of
lumber w ill be used in the con
struction of fhips. Then tie
building of ships will necessarily
bring to St. Helens ot her indus-i
tries which go with an enterprise ;
of that kind. For instance, ma
chine shops and engine works. !
The already large pay roll for
labor in St. Helens will be in
creased about $10,Mi0 per month
by the ship yards alone and other
things which are sure to follow
will bring the St. Helens pay j
roll up close to ?KH.(Ht) per
month. A nice sum to bo paid
out each month for labor in a.
city with les than 1 "() people. '
