ding of her sister, Miss Ethel to
Mr. Coffman. Mrs. Cronkite is
teaching her room during her
absence.
Miss Effie Perkins of Drain,
Ore., is visiting with her sisters
Misses Nellie and Lebna Perkins
this week.
The new Steam Schooner.
Willamette, being built by the
McCormick people will have her
trial trip in the bay at San
Franciseo on December 10, and
will arrive at St. Helens about
the 15th.
E. E. Gooslin. an attorney from
Portland, and connected with the
St. Helens Mill Co. of this place, was
looking after business interests in
St. Helens the past week.
James Gaittens and J. F. Loyd,
of Deer Island were St. Helens
visitors during the earln part of the
week.
Prof. J. W. Fisher, principal of
the Warren School, spent Saturday
and Sunday in the City, visiting
relatives.
Cashies 0. M. Washburn of the
Scappoose Bank was transacting
business in St. Helens Tuesday
afternoon. Mrs. R. L. Farris, of Portland,
spent a few days in St. Helens dur
the week, visiting her parents Mr.
and Mrs. Will Muckle.
Misses Anne and Amy George of
Port land visited with their parents
in this city over Thanksgiving.

formance to an appreciative audi
ence. Every available chair in the
large hall was occupied when the
curtain was raised. The program
was well rendered, the musical part
being exceptionally tine. This was
the first number of the People's
Lyceum Course, which will continue
during the winter months, and no
doubt the entertainments to follow
will meet with the same success that
this one did.
The case of "a Biter Bit" was
exemplified in Houlton last Sun
day. Some fellow with a Sunday
thirst found himself without a
Sunday supply and after several
unsuccessful attempts to get a
little booze, he approached a
friend and offered him $5 to get
a bottle. He had no money
smaller than a $10 gold piece but
the friend took it and started on
his errand but failed to return
with either the booze or the !

tract for the building of a new
boat to take the place of the
America. The new bout will be cal

St. Helens and Portland
through the Willamette Slough. It
w ill be considerably larger than the ,
present boat and will have accoma
dations for about 100 passengers'
and have a speed of about 17 miles I

A number of the members of the
local K. of V. lodge visited Van
couver. Va.-.h., lat Saturday night
to see the fun at a session of the
DeKiesandall returned apparently
well satisfied with their visit.
The case of the State of Oregon
vs Walter Pullienand Harry Ogden,
tried before Justice Hazen on Tues
day resulted in a dismissal. A jury
was called but before the evidence
was all in the district attorney
moved for a dismissal. This was
the case where the defendants were
charged with trespass on enclosed
property, a game preserve near
Clatskanie. Deputy District Atty.
Harris was assisted by Attorney
Howard M. Brownellof Astoria and
Dillard & Day represented the
defendants.
