One year ajro the telephone
service in St. Helens was a very
crude affair. There were some
35 phones on one party line scat
tered all the way from St. Helens
to Scappoose. The switchboard
at the Central office consisted of
one pair of plugs on an old out
of date wall board. Messenger
service was the prevailing order,
always accompanied by a fee,
and be it said that the operators
were not paid for half the work
they did either. To-day we
have an up-to-date service. A
modern 60 line switchboard with
connections to the outlying dis
tricts. There are over 70 sub-1
scribers, most of the business
houses and a large number of
residences now taking the ser
vice. The office is open from 8
o'clock A. M. till 9 at night and
the service could not be improved
upon. These facts are fast be
coming known and as a result
new subscribers are being added
daily. Dr. and Mrs. J. L. Zip-
". perer own the line and one of
them can always be found on the
stool in front of the switchboard
attending to their fast increas
ing business, lhe telephone is
only one of several like improve
ments made in St. Helens' pro
gressive march during the past
few years and ere long we ex
pect to see many more, until we
become indeed a city. Each ad
vance along the lines of indus
trial improvement invites others
and our progressive citizens are
alive to this fact, giving en
couragement to any such legiti
mate enterprise.

Moving picture shows exert
more influence over the young
people in a community than is
generally credited to them. That
influence is either good or evil as
the pictures are either moral or
degrading. A good moral pic
ture conveys as much meaning
as any sermon could and to have
it pictured out in detail, makes
an impression upon a person,
young or old, that is lasting and
effective.
, The political policy of the Mist
will be Republican. It will advo
cate the nomination and election
of Wm. H. Taft for President.
It will oppose Jonathan Bourne
Jr. for Senator. It will support
a good progressive man for Con
gress from this District, reserving
the right of selection of such man
when the candidate are an
nounced. In the main, it will
uphold the popular and progres
sive laws of Oregon.

The returns from the Eastern
elections do not indicate a land
slide for the Democratic party
next year, as wa3 predicted by
the Democratic Press. One very
noticeable feature was the ele
ction of Republican Legislatures
' in New Jersey, and New York
where Democratic Governors hold
forth. This fact will perhaps
not keep Gov. Wood row Wilson
from securing the nomination for
President, but it is a handicap
which he will have to overcome.
