Houlton School
Tbe people of Houlton have the pro
gressive spirit in riiard to the improve
ment of their puUie school. The school
board have recently purchased new maps.
a teluriau, unabridged dictionaries,
drinking fountains, and other needed sup
plies. At a mass meeting held Wednes
day night, the people expre-sed them
selves as favoring the acquiring of more
ground, to have at lfast a three acre
school ground, and also to erect a build
Ing for a play' house and gymnasium.

Pander Pleads ' Not Guilty"
J. A. Pender, under indictment for
the mnrder of Daisy Wehrm.in on Labor
Day, was brought before Jude Eakin
last Tuesday and entered a plea, of not
guilty to the ch trge made in the in
dictment. John Stevenson appears for
the defense. District Attorney E. B.
Tongue and Deputy W. A. Harris for
the prosecution. Very few were present
in the court room besides the jurors,
court officers and Mr. Pender w ho ha:
been with her husband as much as
possible ever since he was arretted. Nn
date was tet (or trial, the prosecution ex
pressing a willir gness to proceed at one
bat tbe defense wishing for a postpone
ment. As Mr. Tongue will be busy with
the other counties over which his duties
extend for some time he could not tuy
at what time he would be able to attend
here again, and the matter hag not lieen
settled yet. The trial may be some tine
during the winter, but it is very probable
that it will go over until the May term
of court.
Tbe regular annual city election will
be held in Houlton on Monday next,
and the offices of Mayor, Couucilmen
and Treaeurer will e fil!ei for the com
ing year. The following nomination'
have been made. For Mayor, It L
Welch J For Councilmen, tw years, L.
H. Combs and Frank Keever; one year.
P. C. Crouse; Trea-urer, Chas, Graham.
A petition is being circulated this
Week and will be presented to the
council at their next meeting for the
improvement of Hemlock Street out
through Columbia l'ark. At preeen
while there is plenty of room for a wagon
to drive over any of the streets out that
way, and they are all clear of brush,
etill there are none of them that are iui
proved to any great extent. I his im
provement, if made, will be assessed to
tbe abutting property and w ill undoubt
edly increase the value far more than
the improvement will cost.
Burke's trial Saturday
John E. Burke, under indictment for
the foiling of a note for 00 which was.
cached at the State Rink of Kainier, was
to have had his trial on Tuesday last but
owing to the fact that one of the princi
pal witnesses, Mr, Lottman, was nut on
hand it was po-tpoued until Saturday.
Burke has b.eu in the tame kind of
trouble several times before, and passed
a note for the same amount, f itKl, in
Washington County tome time ago, for
which E. B. Tongue prosecuted him and
for which he served teveral years at
Salem.
Mrs F. Owens, of Wisconsin, will open
her Gift S ore on Columbia Street to
morrow afternojn. and invites the ladies
of St. Helens to be present, she will
have a first class stock of uovelty g'ods,
books, etc., and should do well in this
city. Mrs. 0ens was acquainted with
the Uob&es in her former home.

Mis. D W. Kichardsoii, who has been
in St. Vincent's Hospital for the past
tw i weeks as the result of an operation,

Tommy Allen, the six year old son of
I'rof. J. W. Allen, died at the (iood Sa
maritan Hospital in Portland la-t Fiiday
morning.' The funeral was held Satur
day afternoon at Forest Grove, Kev.
Hilton, of the Congregational Church,
officiating. Tommy was buried beside
his nrrther in Forest II 11 Cemetery. The
funeral was largely alten Je J y t
