OUR PORTLAND LETTER
Portland Or., 21 (Special)-A
step of permanent constructive
benefit was that taken last Sat
urday nitfht at the Portland Com
mercial Club, when business men
fathered at a dinner to discuss
the benefits of recent excursions
to Klamath Falls, Central Oreg
on and Aberdeen, Wash. The
bitf dinner room was filled by
men of affairs and the experi
ences given and the" policy out
lined for future excursions were
of jrreat value,
The matter developed into a
symposium on the attitude of
Portland buiness men to outside
territory in the two states and
was a Burvey of conditions ex
isting from Aberdeen to Klamath
and in Central Oregon. The re
sult will be a closer tie between
Portland and the outlying country
and this promises to be of great
aid in future development.
Redmond will hold a potato
show on November 2. This is
the date the O. W. R. & N.
lemonstration train arrives at
Redmond and the two events
will undoubtedly bring a very
large number of farmers from
the surrounding country to Red
mond. At the same time a
meeting of dairymen will be held
to organize an association.
The joint line of the Oregon
Trunk and the Deschutes Rail
road will be open to passenger
and freight traffic to Bend from
the Columbia River on November
1. The new lines are now
ojierating to Opel City.
An apple tree near Albany
has been sold for $00. It is
everbearing, maturing fruit at
all seasons of the growing per
iod, with buds, blossoms and
apples on the tree at the same
time. A nursery company has
bought the tree and will try to
estaimsii a new everbearing
variety.
Dairyman and butter and
cheese makers will gather in
Portland December 6, 7 and 8 for
the annual convention and spec
ial plans are under way to make
this years gathering the largest
and most interesting ever held.
Experts from the east will be in
attt ndance to judge the differ
ent exhibits, of which there will
be many, and will know authori
ties on various topics of interest
will deliver addresses. There
will le more and better prizes
ottered than ever before.
The program has just been
made up for the first annual con
vention of the Oregon State
Hotel Association, which will be
held in the convention hall of
the Portland Commercial Club
on December 5 and 6. The hotel
man will disenss matters of mu
tual interest and seek ways to
increase tourist travel to this
state from California and the
East.
Eugene will hold its biggest
apple show on November 3 and 4
the coming exhibit throwing all
previous shows far in the shade-1
The annual fruit exhibition is
growing all the time in impor
tance because of increasing or
chard acreage around Eugene
and this year the festival wil
take on more than local interest,
Prizes have been offered that
make it an object for fruit grow
ers to complete.
Lakeview will add agriculture
to its high school course as soon
as its new building is finished
This is a new and im(ortant fea
ture of the course of study and
one that progressive communities
are adopting.
