The Chinamen who would like
to steer a middle course in
the revolution in their country
are certainly up against a hard
problem. The revolutionists have
issued an edict that all of the
Chinks who are with them must
have their queues off by Saturday
If they cut them off and the
government comes out on top,
their head is pretty apt to go the
same way that the queue went,
for while it does not take long to
cut the long appendage off it is a
different matter to grow it
With the Coast League season
over and the world's series
between Philadelphia and New
York in about the same condition
to say nothing of the fact that
St Helens and Rainier have quit
for 1911. the baseball fan is in
serious trouble. From Septembe
until May is a part of the year
tnat should have been omitted in
the plan of the seasons, and with
nothing to do for the next six
month but to read of the materi
al that McCredie will have to get
away with a pennant in 1912,
the fan will find time hanging
heavy on his hands.
ANOTHER FOOL
The great state of California
has adopted the initiative, the
referendum, and the recall (not
even excepting Judges from the
latter measure). The Oregonian,
having at all times the materia
interests of the State at heart,
may now be consoled by the
knowledge that Oregon is not the
only fool in the family of States
No more need it entertain the
fear, so vividly expressed when
Oregon adopted these measures,
that desirable immigration would
be diverted to California and
r a a
Washington, tor, lo, they are
sillier than we, for both the dod
gastea miots have adopted wo
man suffrage, and this, too, only
a comparatively short time before
the opening of the great Pana
ma exposition. Think of the
tide of immigration that is com
ing this way, and what an advan
tage we will have over our neigh
bors to the north and south. We
have adopted the initiative, ref
erendum and recall, but we are
not yet silly enough to admit that
women are our equals in intelli
gence and qualified to exercise
the suffrage. We are not the
worst fool in the family. There
are depth to which we have not
yet descended. There is millions
in this idea . if it is properly
worked-millions of sturdy im
migrants and standard dollars.
Let the Portland Commercial
Club publish a million pamphlets
with the legend on the title page
"The only State on the Pacific
Coast that does not permit wo
men to vote." Then watch them
sidestep California and Washing
ton and swarm in countless multi
tudes over the plains, mountains
and valleys of "This Oregon of
Ours." Degradation is a compar
ative term, and the Oregonian,
which at one time deemed its
State buried in a "perverse pro
fund of obliquity," may take
heart of grace from an old story:
Two travelers in the Mississippi
Valley stopped at a home where
an intelligent appearing white
woman had married a negro.
Shocked and surprised, they in
quired what her parents thought
JUSTICE HARLAN.
In the death of Justice Harlan
the people of the United States
have lost a friend. He was near
er to them than any other mem

We are Just a little lute in mention ill):
our visit to lininier on Columbia iluv,
but since it was an occasion for so lunch
pleasure to all the bova and girls who
went, wo want the. ttainicr Imy ami

tuind. for a long time in the futuie, the
many efforts that they put fcrth to in
sure us a day of real pleasure.
Friday was "domestic art" day in the
school and the tx) as well as the girl
entered the contest and brought honor
onto themselves. 1 Mr thy John ami
Roy Laws won the prizes for tint best
pies baked by the pupils. We hnd s
pnav to claim that members of
. . . i i .iivu number of visitors dunug the afternoon
that great tribunal should be ab-, yiew Uie u
solutely unbiased and base their
opinions upon nothing but the
cold letter of the law; but experi
ence has demonstrated that this
is impossible. The followers of
Jefferson placed one construc
tion upon the Constitution and
held that this was nothing but a
loose league of States, from
which any member had a right
to withdraw at will, while Alex
ander Hamilton's political disci
ples held it to an indissoluble
union, with inherent right to
coerce rebellious state. Both were
equally patriotic and honest, ac
cording to their divergent ideas.
The great issue upon which they
divided having been settled by
the civil war, others have arisen,
and upon these modern questions
Justice Harlan was found to be
in sympathy with the people and
to stand for their construction of
the law, while his colleagues fa
vored a construction whereby
judtres of inferior courts are giv
en great latitude and enabled to
use their power against the pub
lic and in favor of the corpora
tions, if they are so inclined. So
the people have lost a friend and
his successor will be appointed
by f resident latt. Having re
moved Hughes from his path as
a rival for the presidency, the
appointment of the new justice
will be a clear cut test of the
President's attitude toward the
corporations and the people.
School Notes.
The number of pupils enrolled to date

accommodation for eight grade and
