FEEDING IS IMPORTANT AS PRINCIPAL SOURCE OF PROFIT Farmer Now Provides Live Stock With Canned Green Fodder. Called "Sllatte," Made Most Commonly From Corn, Cow-Pens, Clover, or Alfalfa, Chopped Fine and Stored In Silos. 'tfitltnt - wrm Solid Modern Concrete Silo. The principal source of profit In dairying, stock-raising and farming Ilea in Improving the quality and at the same time keeping down th cost of production. In this matter of profit and loss nothing plays such an Im portant part as th question of feeds and fuedlng. The natural feed for ani mals, the one on which they do best. Is green pasture. In climate subject to frost, man has made the same pro vision for animals as for himself by providing them In winter with canned green fodder called "silage." Bllage Is made most commonly from corn, cow peas, clover, sorghum, or alfalfa, mere ly chopped line and stored In large water-tight can known a "silos." In ,' f '. T I. I i a i x Showing Reinforcing. dry weather or In winter, when green pasture cannot be had, this feed is equally good In producing a flow of milk or In putting fat on animal. One acre of a crop harvested a silage will feed twice a much stock aa the same mount harvested In any other man ner. Like a (Onus fruit Jnr, a silo must be water-tight and Jolntless to keep the llnge from molding or "dry firing." For this reason, and also because no painting or repairing Is ever neces sary, solid-wall concrete alio are coming Into general use. The best silos are built circular In shape. The size depends upon how mnny anlmala are to be fed dally, the quantity In pounds for each animal's dally feed, and the number of days It may be necessary to feed them. The silo should be of such size that a layer of silage at least two Inches In depth will be removed each day after feed ing ha begun. This prevent a thin top layer from molding. A dairy cow require about forty pound of silage per day, and the following table 1 based on this amount. Forty pound I also the average weight of a cubic foot of silage. Locate the silo where it will be con venient for feeding, dually It 1 joined to the barn by mean of chute and passageway with door. Since the silo and It contents are heavy. It must be built on solid ground. The bottom of the foundation should go below frost line. The silo may, with advantage, extend four to five feet Into the ground. Dig the pit large enough to allow for the thick ness of the circular walla and a foot ing two feet wide. In order to save lumber the con crete I poured Into forms which can be moved up a the concrete set or become hard. These movable form consist of two circular shell three to four feet high, so made that one fits within the other with apace between tor a six-Inch wall. The horizontal framework consists of I by 4 Inch tim bers cut to a circle, which are cov ered with sheet metal or wooden lag ging. Each piece must be long enough to provide for a six-foot three Inch length of the circumference of the circle as well as several Inche for the lap or it rap Joint. The form are raised by loosening them at the joint and setting them up again on the fin ished section of the silo. Concrete for silos should be rich In Portland cement and should be put Into the forms mushy wet. Mix It one part cement to two parts sand to four part crushed rook. Four part of clean pit or bank-run gravel may be used Instead of the sand and rock. Measure all materials on the basis that one bag of cement equals one cubic foot. Many person raise the concrete In buckets, but the work can be done more quickly aud easily by using a horse together with a der rick or a well braced Jib-boom fixed to an adjoining building. The first cost of concrete silo may or may not be greater than that of the best of any other kind. The time 1 now at hand when farmer, like rail road and corporation, are consider ing the lasting qualities of building. Concrete silos need no Insurance; they do not blow down or burn up. They never have to be painted or re paired. With other kinds of silos dur ing their short lives these expense alone equal the first cost. Concrete lasts forever. COMBINED TOOL HANDY ON FARM Scoop Detachably Connected and line Groove fnr Tinea Advantages are Easily Sn. A combination Implement that Is handy for farm and stable use has been designed by a man In the tate of Washington. It 1 a fork and shovel combined, and It advantage I that It Fork and Shevl In On. take up no more room than one of the tool and can quickly be turned from one Into the other. The balo Implement 1 a fork, and the hovel portion I adjutably connected. In the head of th acoop are hole through which the tines of the fork pass when the scoop Is to be attached, and across the bottom is a metal (trip with a series of longitudinal grooves, through which the tine also pas and which lerves to hold the shovel firmly In position. The usefulness of such a tool can readily be understood. In a case where a man has both shovel ing and forking to do, as around a barnyard, he can accomplish the work by a quick transformation of thl de vice Insttad of having to go and get a different Implement every once In a while. Cow Weeding. The removal of weed cow from the herd 1 doing more for'the dairy busi ness than perhaps any other one thing. So profitable ha thl line of dairy work proved that many dairy men who were about ready to abandon the dairy business have taken a fresh start. Vxxt the mere removal of weed cow 1 not enough. Their place must be taken by better one. These are easily secured by using pure-bred sires of known milk producing strain. Record show that this line of work 1 also profitable. More and more dairy men annually are adopting it. Some men tbemaelve do the work of weed ing and breeding; other rely upon eow-testlng associations. These as sociations cost little and pay well as cow weeders. Want Bureau of Inspection.
