County Official
Paper
The matter of paving; the
Strand was brought before the
council by petition last week. The
petition asks that it be paved
from the court house site to the
dock of the St. Helens Mill Co.
This is an improvement that has
been badly needed for some time
and will add much to the looks of
the town.
The County Court is in session
here this week, and as usual the
largest qart of their buisness
will be the matter M road work.
If the present court was to hold
office for a few years there
would de good highways all over
the county.
The schools of the county are
planning for the conducting of a
series of debating and athletic
contests during the present term.
This is a good thing for all con
cerned, and especially the older
boys. It is a hard matter to
keep the boys in school after
they get old enough to go and
work for themselves, and it has
been found in other places that a
judicious mixture of athletics
with the stndies will do a lot in
in this way.
C. T. Prescott says that there
is as much iron in this county as
there is in the famous Mesabi
Range, in Minnesota, which is
the most productive iron section
in the world. He gives as the
reason for it3 non-development
the fact that there is not the
necessary coal here, and that as
soon as the coal fields of Alaska
are opened up there will be
something doing in the Columbia
County iron. The coal found in
Washington has not the coking
qualities, and is not suitable for
smelting. Mr. Prescott has been
all over the county, and being a
practical engineer and one who is
experienced in the matter of
iron ore, should know what he
is talking about when he says
that the day is not far distant
when the iron business in this
county will be larger than any
other.
many sections of Otvgoti oqual in
area and has only lnun to re
claim lare tracts of barren moor
by reforesting. " Holland is a
land created by driving back the
sea and its continued existence
depends on keeping out the
water. Helgium is the most
densely populated country on
earth, chiefly the result of its
great manufactures and com
merce, but Oregon has as rich,
if not richer, soil, and has re
sources for as great manufactures
and as world-wide commerce.
Alsace-Lorraine and Luxemburg
cannot excel the soil of Oregon
for fertility. Switzerland is a
land of mountains and her people
are crowded in the valleys,
which have their counterpart in
the valleys of Oregon. They
derive much wealth from the
hosts of tourists who go to see
fheir mountains and lakes, but
Oregon can match their scenery
and has much more of it. Maine
cannot compare with Oregon
for fertility, and, though it is the
pleasure resort of the North
Alantic Coast, the attractions of
Oregon in that respect far excel
hers.
It is a reasonable conclusion
that 21.594,689 people can as well
make a living in Oregon as they
can in all the combined counties
mentioned. It is in the ground,
only waiting to be dug out. Mr.
Elliott wisely urged that the
"newcomer avoid the crowded
industrial centers and live where
he can produce food and wealth
out of the ground." We do not
need larger cities so much as we
need a larger rural population.
Such a population will develop a
number of smaller towns and
cities as local centers of business.
We need also to develop the
scenic attractions of the state,
that we may draw away some of
that $200,000,000 to $100,000,000
which Americans annually spend
in Europe, and of which Mr.
Elliott spoke. These attractions
exist now mainly in the rough.
We need solid, macadamized
! road to them, such as attract
tourists -vto Europe. We need
hotels in the mountains, where
they can live in comfort. We
need guides to conduct them on
mountain-climbing trips. We
need rapid, easy and comfortable
means of tranportation. Then!
we can safely invite the world to
enjoy scenery which Switcher
cannot surpass in beauty, and
can develop this along with our
many other resources.

Now it is up to the Supreme
Court of the United States to-decide
as to the constitutionality
of the Oregon system, as there is
a corporation who does not be
lieve that the new laws have a
right to be on the books. It is
not likely that the decision of the

government of the State of Ore

The comparison recently made
by President Howard Elliott, of

with the State of Maine added, is
