THE WEHRMAN CASE
The New Station
Many Circumstance Point
J. A. Pender as Guilty
Man. Mail Clew
Strongest
Sheriff A. E. Thomson has
worked night and day since the
discovery of the bodies of Mrs.
Wehrman and her three year old
son Harold in their lonely cabin
near Scappoose and is now con
vinced that he has the guilty
man in the toils of the law.
Many bits of circumstantial evi
dence point to J. A. Pender and
there is no doubt but that he will
have to stand trial at the term of
Court to he held next month for
the atrocious double murder.
Thompson first suspected this
man the morning after the crime
was committed, when he ap
peared at the scene of the mur
der with several long scratches
on his face such as would be
made by the finger nails of a per
son resisting him. There were
three scratches down the left side
and one or two others on various
parts of his face. From that
time Pender was under constant
surveillance. With the aid of
the Portland Police Department
the Sheriff was able to keep an
eye on him at all times, At one
time the Sheriff spent three days
in the wood3 near the suspect's
tent, being drenched to the skin
and going hungry several times.
Pender began to move around
and when he went to Independ
ence the Sheriff was afraid that
he might slip away from him, and
arrested him, taking him to Port
land, where he has been sweated
many times.
Though nothing could be ob
tained from his statements in a
direct way, his numerous contra
dictions gave the officers some
thing to work on. The strongest
evidence against him is that of
the paper that was delivered at
the Wehrman home before the
murder. It was found, still wrap
ped up, by the officials. From
the fact that it was still in the
wrapper, the officials say that it
must have been taken there but
shortly before the commission of !
the crime, and have worked on turn out of the older ones, to
the theory that the person who j enter high school, was a pleas
took it to the cabin was the guilty I ant surprise to the directors and
man and used the naDer aa an I Professor Wilkerson, as there
having used it a couple of times.
The trunk that it was in was
opened at about the time of the
crime, the lock being removed,
and then placed back where it
belonged in an effort to conceal
the fact that it had been tamp
ered with. Nothing had been
stolen. The bullets found at the
Wehrman cabin are identical with
the kind used in this revelver.
The officers say that if the cabin
of the iron molders had been en
tered by some tramp there would
have been something stolen, and
that there would have been no
care taken to conceal the fact
that the trunk had been opened.
The officers are still at work
and are daily bringing out more
small circumstances that point to
Pender. The preliminary hear
ing has not as yet taken place,
but will be held here in the near
future.
Pender is in jail in Portland,
and has retained Seneca Fouts as
counsel. His father is a member
of the detective force of Salt
Lake City, and he has written to
him to come and help him. Fouts
is one of the best criminal lawyer
in Oregon, and there will pe no
chance of a conviction if Pender
is not guilty. .
COUNTY COURT
The following letter has been
received this week from W. E.
Coman, General Freight and
Passenger Agent of the S. P. &
Sr. by Mr. McCormick, of this
city, and would seem to indicate
that there will be something do
ing in the depot line in the near
future.
Portland, Sept. 11
H. F. McCormick
Co McCormick Lbr. Co.
Portland, Oregon
Dear Sir:
Referring to the matter of es
tablishing a new station to be
called St. Helens.
I am sorry that there has been
such a delay in our making fur
ther investigation of this, but
hope that I will either be able to
come to St. Helens myself or
have the committe meet me here
to further discuss this matter.
Will you please advise the com
mittee that I have not overlooked
this matter, but that it has been
unavoidably delayed and will now
receive my earliest attention.
Yours truly,
W. E. Coman.
Everything possible is being
done to hasten the matter, and
there will soon be some definite
action taken by the company,
and it seems that there i3 only
one fair thing for the company
to do. and that is give St. Helens
a station.
School Opens
The youngsters gathered at
the school house and at the City
Hall last Monday morning,
already for the 1911-12 term of
school, and there was certainly a
good sized crowd of them. The
excuse for his visit Guy Whit
ney, clerk at the Scappoose post
office, says that he delivered the
paper to Pender on the day of
the crime, and is corroborated in
his statements to a certain ex
tent by Mr. Lindloff. Pender
says that he left the paper in the
mail box, but two men with him
at the time he says that he done
so are prepared to swear that he
put only letters in the box.
The night of the crime Pender
says that he was at his tent and
had lighted his lamp at 7:30. Mr.
Lindloff passed there shortly
after this time and says that he
did not see Pender around and
that there wa3 no light burning
in the tent. Pender did not milk
his cow on thi3 night and allowed
his clock to run down.
Near Pender's tent there is a
cabin own ed by a couple of iron
molders who work in Portland,
paying frequent visits to their
them owns a revolver of rather a
peculiar pattern. Pender knew
less
were seventeen on hand, which
is more than' was expected by
several. The classes are divided
as follows-
First grade, 29 pupils, Miss
Phillip. This class is in the
Commercial Club room at the
City Hall, and will remain there
until the new building is com
pleted. Second and Third Grades, 45
pupils. Miss Hazen.
Fourth and Fifth Grades, 34,
pupil3, Miss Farnham. j
Sixth and Seventh Grades, 29
pupils, Miss Weed.
The Eighth, Ninth, Tenth and
Eleventh Grades are taught by
Professor Wilkerson, and will
have 31 pnpils. There are 17
in the eighth, 13 in the ninth,
3 in the tenth and one in the
eleventh,
This makes a total enrollment
for the year of 171, which i3 by
far the largest in the history of
St. Helens, and it is not at all
unlikely that there will be enough '
pupils added to this to raise the
total to 200. 1
