open it will bring a large number of new
people into the county.
Adjudged Insane

to the state insane asylum from tbi

there was any property in that neigh

real estate business, and has lots all

Welch was a newcomer who was looking
for a nice place to mnee a home. He
showed him two bunches of lots, one
wUi HiXJand the other $150, making in
all fH."0, and Welch agreed to iake them
but thought that tha pr ce waa too low
and raid ho would make it f.KX). Money
was absolutely no object to him and
according to himself he had more of it
put away in a back in rriend than all
ol the banks in the State of Oregon con
tain, l'y evening he was so well known
at Ilonlton that Marsh il Long was tak
ing care of him, and be s on graduated
from the little jail at Houlton to the
strong box in the basement of the court
house, llefore lieing picked UD be had
passed several small checks on different
people, but iu the aggregate they will
not amount to more tlnn a few dollars.
Welch, his wife, daughter and grand
daughter are but newcomers here, and
Ins folks are the complainants tn the
matter, as be is undoubtedly insane
The attendants of the O. S I. A. came
down and took him 'awny Wednesday

THE RAILROAD LANDS
A copy of the speech made by Con
gressman Lall'erty on House Joint Keso
lution No. 121, directing the Attorney
General to employ at least one resident
attorney of the Stale of Oregon as asso
ciate counsel in behalf of the doverii
ment to Kid in the further prosecut'on
of the suit against the Oregon and Cali
fornia Railroad, bis reached the Mist
olllce, and from it anyone can learn a
lot of this case, which Mr. LatUrly des
cribes s the biggest real estate suit
ever filed. All told there are 2,:S00,00i
acres of land involved, and some of it
is among the finest in the state.
This bind was grunted .under an set
of April 20th, 1809, which rend in part
as follows: "And provided further the
lands granted by the act aloresaid shall
lie sold to actual settlers only, in quan
tities uot greater thin one quarter sect
ion only, and for a price not exceeding
fiO per acre.
It is a big suit ond the outcome of st
is hard to foresee. Of course the rail
roads mill light it to the tiiiixlr
Their claim is that the terma of the
grant are so Indefinite that the provisions
aannot be enforced. The present suit
seems to b (or a forfeiture of the land,
I.a-t week was a red letter week in the
lives of the memliers of Mr. Ruther
ford's Sunday School class. Accompnn
ied bv Rev a. A. Heist the boys started
fur Camp Live Wire on the headwaters
of the Clatskanie, Wednesday morning.
The thirteen miles from St. Helens to
the a ip were covert d before noon and
iu a remnrkably short time after arrival
all bauds were full of "ham and
After dinner tents were pitched, cedar
bough beds built, wood gathered, etc
In the evening after dishes had been
washed (and wiped!) and a camp fire
s' si ted, the boys organized themselves
into a eity government. The dignity
of mayor was thrust Upon Cecil Ross.
Mitt McKie and Koy Laws became apt
imitators of ihe best of our city fathers
in the capacity of councilmen. Charles
Smith assumed the role of marshal while
James Adams became the dispenser of
justice by virtue ol his office as recorder.
To lay that all bad a good time doesn't
begin to convey the though ol the boys.
They were true to their class name in
every sense of the woid. From reveille
at 5 ::IU in the morning to retreat at 9 :00
in the evening, there was something do
ing every minute. Of coure most of
the big fish got away but the smaller
ones tasted quite as good.
The climax of fun came with the ses
sion of the recorders court, Friday even
ing. It was a day of judgment to not a
few who were guilty of violating the un
written laws of the camp. Judge Adams
meted out justice with an iron hand anil
more than one had occasion to remem
ber other hands for some time.
At eight o'cloclr, Saturday morning
the compnny began the return 'march
for home but each with the firm resolve
to go again next year. It has now been
definitely determined that the regular
attendants of the class will camp at the
coast next year. Hurrah for the Live
Wires .
