oats, potatoes, corn, barley,
apples, sugar beets, alfalfa, hops
etc.
The New York exposition will

lectures, literature and actual
farmers will demonstrate the ad

The show will voice the cry of
back to the soil". It will show
tillers of worn-out land how to
rejuvenate their soils or where
to seek richer farms, it will point
the city man to green fields and
will direct the immigrant. It is
of special advantage for Oregon
and Washington to be well rep

commercial bodies and the rail
roads are urging the fullest co
operation by Northwest produ
cers. F. W, Graham, Western
Immigration Agent for the Great
Northern Railway. Portland, will
supply entry blanks to all who
will exhibit and will give full in

Urging the governors of all the
states to help along the "See
America First" movement, Gov
ernor West has addressed a letter
to them calling their attention to
the beauties of the Pacific North
west and making them an urgent
appeal to do everything possible
to stay the tide of foreign travel
and turn it to the Pacific coast.
Govenor West calls attention to
the fact that this tendency on
the part of Americans is a great
economic loss to the country and
and should be combatted on
every possible occassion. He
estimates that $3,000,000 is spent
abroad every season by Ameri
cans that should be used in see
ing their own country instead.
The Govenor calls attention to
the big convention called for
Baltimore January 22-27, 1912.
when the "See America First"
movement will be discussed and
asks that each state send a big
delegation.
Crook County will have a big
fair and livestock show lasting
from October 11 to 14. Prepar
ations to gather a comprehensive
exhibit of the products of Cen
tral Oregon for the show have
jflready started and each of the
largest cities of the county,
Prineville, Bend, Redmond and
Madras, will have one day at the
Fair. The exhibits to be shown
will be sent to Chicago and New
York after the Fair closes for
exhibition at the big land shows
next Winter.
Sumpter will have the a big
celebration of the year on Labor
Day, September 4, which is a
bigger holiday among the miners
than even the Fourth of July.
Rock drilling contests and other
sports characteristic of a mining
region will be held.
Lane County expects to have
the biggest showing of registered
stock it has ever assembled for
its annual county fair, opening
September 20 and lasting four
davs. The exhibit pavillion will
be much enlarged and a groat
showing of f arm products will bfl

ASSING OF LANDMARK
In the remodelling of the old
Meeker house, the younger people
of Columbia County see nothing
but the improvement to result.
To the old settlers of the .county
however, the partial destruction
of this building, which hafe with
stood the ravages of time for
more than sixty years, a far
different feeling comes.
The building was constructed
for Capt. Knighton in 1851, by
!. A. Miles, Wm. Caine and A.
I. Johnson. The lumber and
timbers used in its construction
was manufactured by Francis
'erry at a mill located at Milton
near the old Perry place west of
Ioulton, whence it was hauled
with ox teams by S. A. Miles.
When completed in June, 1851,
it represented the first frame
building to be constructed in
Columbia County from Oregon
made materials.
The building was occupied by
Captain Knighton for a period
of ten years when he moved to
Vancouver, Wash., renting the
house to a Mr. Peecher. In 1862
Wm. Meeker purchased the house
from Capt. Knighton, where
with his wife Emeline Meeker
nee Benton, he made his home
until his death in 1882. The old
home was occupied by "Aunty"
Meeker, until her death in Oct.,
1909.
Jacob George who recently
purchased the property will move
a portion of the building to the
rear of the lot 'where it will be
thoroughly renovated and re
paired to be used as a dwelling
house.
