CLATSKANIE WINS
The Hammond Lumber Co , the
would be rhitmpioiis from Astoria, and
the team that bus t eat ull of them on
the lower river, but got an aw ful nkinn
ing at thi place, made another mistake
last .Sunday and straed out of their
own county and into Columbia, where
there are some real barn-ball teams.
Thi time they slopjied at Clnti-kunie,
and almost got away with a game, but
the Indian were tlinre in tin home
Ht retch and lit the finish the score wall
all to the giad and in their favor, 7 to U.
The game was a nip and tuck affair,
the vixitors leading up until the eighth
inning when the braves lied the score,
and the ninth panning uneventfully, the
run put across by the hone team in the
last half of the tenth was the one that
got the baron There was lots of hard
hitting, and some pretty IVlding, though
it is probable that if either of ClatHkauie's
regular twirlera, llaggin and I'.rvant, had
been on the job, the game would have
been decided a lot sooner than it was.

BASEBALL NOTES
Peter Ilrakke was cer.ainly there.
The team that Rainier had here ran
put up a whole lot better game than they
did Sunday. They got off on the wrong
foot, and w ith the St Helen team hitt
ing the way they were there was noth
ing to it.
Huggin was hit hard, hut that fact!
does not make him any the less a good
pitcher. Joe was working good, but the
Biipairt he bad in the second inning
was enough to throw anyone off. Three
errors when each of tliem meant a run.
Ihidley Clark is certainly some ball
player and the way he hits is a sight to
see Hut it was good when Haguitl
parsed him with two on and two out.
llallagh was the next up and got a clean
iugle.
Serr is the lie t catcher that has been j
on the St. Heleui diamond this year.
He has out hit and out played all of
them. And did you ever notice the
way he gets under the foul tips? He is
a regular shark at it.
Stevens has not lost a gsnie for St.
Helens this year, with tlm exception of
the one that was forfeited by the um
pire at Knlama, and lie would have won
that if it hsd went the ful! nine innings.
Next Suuday the Columbus Club will
be here and a week from Sunday Ka
lama come up to let u get even . The
ColumbuH Club was formerly the C. Y.
M. C. and out of IS games played this
year have l.wt but one. The week after
Kalamu plays here the team goes to
Kalama.atid the first Sunday in August
they go down to Rainier. An excursion
w ill las run to each of the out of town
games and everyone should go. The
game with the Columbus Club next Sun
day will be the best of the season.
The game went off without any dis
agjecable rag chewing, and the Kainier
hoys and management seemed to be
perfectly satisfied w ith the decisions ot
Mr. Morton, who held the indicator. It
gave the people of S. Helens and the
fans in particular a lot of satisfaction
to have things'pass off an well, as after
the disagreements of lust year it was
feared that there might lie some of the
old feeling enter into the contest. Asa
result there will undoubtedly be large
crowd accompany the team when they
goto Rainier.
