DY MARY WOOD AYRES
"io to the country to live. And
keep out of doors as uiui li aa you

Herbert Vane g.-ive an exclamation
of diagnst. " hate the country. And
what about my d gree,,"
Ihm tor Hay shook a warning finger.
"Juki you leave that degree alone un
leaa you want to die aa young aa
your father did. If you must have
something to do, go In for chickens.
Von will find tlist they will abaorb

That Is why young Vane bought the
Hlver lload farm and atarted In to
make his fortune. Not that thla lat
ter waa exactly necessary. Hut, he
grimly determined. If he had to give
up all of hla cherished plans on ac
count of his health, he would at least
bsve a sanitarium that paid Ita own
running expensea.
. At the end of six montha be was
rather surprised to find that he had
grown very much Interested In the
place. Kven hla short evenings were
spent In pouring over farm Journsls.
Or, more often, poultry magazines, for
he had contracted a bad case of ben
fever.
When he csme to consult his bank
books, however, he was confronted by
a ong Hat of debits. The chit kens bad
been the cause of the greatest out
lay, and tbe least returns. New stork,
new bouses, and high-priced food,
footed up an astounding total. , It was
tn vain that he assured himself that
the whole did not amount to more
than a trip abroad would have cost
As a poultrymsn he waa a failure.
How to make the chirk -na pay. that
was tbe question. A phrase, constant
ly repeated In the daily papers, re
curred tn him. The consumer's dol

would be glad to get eggs guaranteed
to be strictly fresh At least once a
week he drove there for supplies. He
would establish an egg route.
A morning's canvassing brought
him all the customers he could sup
ply and for some weeks all went
smoothly. Then. In constantly In
creasing numbers, his eggs went a
begging. "No. I don't need any eggs. Miss
Geddls brought me some yesterday."
This Is what be rear! frequently.
"I feel that I ought to buy from
Miss Oeddls." one of his best cus
tomers explained. "She belongs to
our club."
Who was this Geddls person? And
why did she persist In butting In on
bis egg route?
"If this keeps on much longer I
will have to fall back on the commis
sion men." he said wrnthfully.
He waa on his way home with his
basket still half full of eggs, when
someone hailed htm. He looked up
to see a brown-eyed girt, standing
beside a very much dilapidated horse
and wagon.
Vane Jumped down and asked what
was the matter.
"It Is the old harness. It Is always
breaking." cheerfully. "You are Mr.
Vane 1 have been wanting to meet
you. Perhaps you may have henrd of
me, too. I am Miss Geddls."
He stiffened with a renewed sense
of Injury.
Perhaps she saw it I suppose
ihlnk I am pretty mean to sell

hastily. "Hut I found out that you
did not need to sell tnem and I ao.

at last climbed up on her rickety

lie thought about her a good many
times In the next few days of hef

lonely, and it whs good to talk to a
person of hla own ag.
Hut It was only an Interest In

That was the reason he gave himself
ss his horse plodded up the steep in
ctlne. inT the Corning hill. It was
worth the trip. Just to get the view
down the valley.
Ho had no difficulty In finding the
place. Miss Geddls herself was draw
ing water from the well, and hailed
hlra Joyfully.
It waa not much of a place, bis
first glance assured him. Dwelling
house and barn, while originally well
built, were sadty In need of paint and
repairs. The chicken bouses and
coops, which the girl displayed proud
ly, were put together from old lum
ber, more with an eye to their dura
bility than to their beauty.
"I made them all myself In the last
six months."
"Then you have not always lived
here?"
"O, no. I was brought up in the
country, but after father died I went
to work In a city department store.
I could not stand It there." with a
little grimace. "The bad air made
me sick. When Aunt Martha asked
me to live with her I was glad to
come. Aunt Martha has a pension,
but It's not big enough for two. That's
why I started the chickens."
While she talked she bsd been
showing ber chickens, handling them
lovingly. Vane had to admit that she
had a fine lot of young ones coming
on.
"You hatched out all those with
hens?" he asked Incredulously.
"Yes, Indeed, and I bave btrdly lost
one."
"You certainly understood the
chicken business."
"It Is because I am so fond of
tbem," giving a final stroke to her
pet rooster.
letter in the house, over some of
Aunt Martha'a very good gingerbread.
Miss Geddls made an apology.
"I am afraid I have not been very
nice about that egg route." shame
facedly. "When I found out you had
all the best people I was Just
desperate. I went a day earlier, to
try and sell mine first and I Joined
the Woman's club to boom my trade.
But what I want to know Is why
don't you ask more than tho store
does?"
Vane humbly admitted that It bad
never occurred to him to ask more.
"Wo ought to get more than for
those old cold storage eggs. We have
a monopoly of the fresh eggs In this
town and we ought to make tho peo
ple pay. It made me mad to get
so little after all my bard work, but
I did not dare to raise my price above
youro."
For a moment she devoted herself
to the gingerbread. Then, half tim
idly. "I wonder why we don't form
a partnership. I believe that I can
sell the eggs better than you can.
It would be much better to bavo a
route Id Radnor Instead of In our
village. There are more rich people
there and they would pay better
prices. Only I bave not had enough
eggs to make It worth while to go
that far. Now If I could sell your
eggs as well as mine," tentatively.
Tbe partnership waa formed then
and there and It prospered. It pros
pered so exceedingly that In the
course of a year It was Incorporated
under a new name Mr. and Mrs.
Herbert Vane.
Human Frights.
A motor car was proceeding along
a country lane. In It were seated two
motorists wearing the most correct

etc. On swinging round a curve they
came full upon a groom who waa exer

mals appeared to be very restive the
car was brought to a standstill, but
the horses' terror only grew worse.
One of the motorists called on the
groom: "Can't you get them past?
We've stopped the car."
To their aurprlse the man respond

you gentlemen will only get out and

Cigarette Beetleo.
A British medical puper claims to
have discovered a new species of In
sect, which gives a setback to the idea
that nicotine kills germs. This new
pest Is a sort of beetle, not much
larger than a germ, which breeds tn
tobacco. The Insects have been Iden
tified as iAsadermo Serrlcorne, and at
tention waa drawn to them several
years ago by the British museum. It
waa first claimed that they were found
In Burma cigars and Manila cheroots,
but now they have been located in
greater quantities In cigarettes. Tho
effect of tho work of the cigarette
