RAINIER ITEMS.
R tinier, Oregon, April 2tl, 11)11
Hi e limst concert and ball ever given
in Rainier was Riven nuder tli auspice
of the Hon Temps haiicing Club o( thi
city. 1'. A Campbell's Hand of Port
laud, consisting of twenty pieces, fur
nislied the music An eicelent musical
program was given. After the concert
dancing began. At niiduight a tlue
lunch was served, and then dancing was
resumed until the full program and
a number of extras were danced. Camp-
hell's band is the !est that ever visited
this city and auv time Mr. Campbell
wants anything from Rainier he only
needs ak for it. Forty couple" graced
the floor, and the continues worn by the
adies will compare favorably with any
seen in the more pretentious cltlea.
Kahuna came to Rainier thi afternoon
with two boatloads of rooters, and when
they lined up five of Nick Williams
I'ippins were among them. Joe Haggin
aud Shorty Thurston were the battery
for Rainier, with a nice little sore arm
each. Ha'gin gave 'six men bases on
balls, while Thurston made no attempt
to throw to second. Gates went Into
the box for Kalama with Kirby behind
the bat. Kirby certainly Can throw to
second ; the ball goes down like a bullet.
Gates blew up in the second and gave
Rainier her first three runs. Kalama
made her first two rani in the third in
uing. Gates was then replaced by Ber
serf who nave Rainier three runs in the
third inning, after that Berger settled
down and there was nothing doing on
either side until the seventh inning,
when each team annexed a run. In the
ninth inning Kalama matte one spas
modic effort but only one run crossed
the pla'e, the score standing 4 to 7 In
favor of Rainier. Had Berber been put
in on the start and warmed up properly
before the game, there might have been
a different story, but luck was with the
fat manager and he stowed away an
other victory.
The new concrete bridge, which it be
ing built across Nice Creek in this city,
U bt'iii' rushed by the contractors, who
expect to have it finished within sixty
days from DOW.
Jos. Lumijarvi, of Quiucy, was a caller

SHIPPING NEWS
The past week has leeu a good one
along the water front and the lumber
shipments from this p .rt have ben liu
usually heavy. Seven steam ships have
taken oil full or partial loads, and oth
ers are still arriving.
On Friday last the biif Rritish tramp
Inverkip finished loading and left with
l full cargo, 2,000.000 of which waa
taken on here, for Freeiimntle, Austra
lia. The Inverkip is one of the biggest
boat that ever touched here and looked
niHid tied up at our docks. The mint
day that the Inverkip left the Steam
Schooner Klamath of the McCoimiik
line cleared with a 1.000,000 of luliiu r
aud sixty pa ( tigers for San Francisco.
The Temple K. Dorr was the next to
load. Waving here Saturday with tiftO,
000 for San Francisco, and on Tuesday
last the Shoshone cleared with another
carno uf 050,000. Thursday the Yosem-
ite left with Hot), OX) and a full pautengcr
list, and tonight the Casco is due to de
part with about 6.i0,000. The Shoshone,
Yosemite and Casco will go to San l'e
dro, California. The Steamer Johan,
I'oulson railed Wednesday fur about
100,000 feet of lumber.
This is a big week's business for a
small town and the amount paid the
longshoiemeu for loading these several
boats is ib the neigtiborh od of lSo0.
The boats also buy a considerable
amount o( supplies from the local mer
chants, besides the amount ol moi ey
spent here by the olllcer and crew.
The taking on of t ie pasHenirer for
the boats of the McCormick Liue at this )
place instend of at Portland w ill prove i
to be a considerable advertisement fori
i
the town, as in the course uf a few ;
years there will be a large uumlier of
people call here who would not other-!
wi-e know there was such a place in ex- j
istcticeas St. Helens. The papers daily I
contain reports of the poor condition of
the lumber market, but it has not be- i
come noticeable at this place. Frulu all )
local indications it would seem to lie
improving every day.
