The product Ion of good, henllhy to
bacco plants fit for transplanting In
the field Is one of the most Important
operations of tobacco growing, says
tho Orange Judd Farmer. It Is the
well known policy of most tobacco
grower to plant more seed and have
larger beds than neceasary when the
weathor and everything are favorable
to production of good, strong, healthy
plants. V. 8. Pelmer of Connecticut,
after loaing several years In succes
sion his crop of small -Junta by freez
ing, decided to make a bed this spring
In w hich ho was sure to grow oa ninny
and healthy plants na he wished. The
oust of thla bed, he claims. Is about
on and one-half day's extra labor, or
three dollars more than what his old
beds coat htm. This seed bed, ns
Illustrated above, Is 41 feet wide, hi
feet long nnd four nnd one half feet
high to tho eaves and about nine feet
high In the center. On the west and
it-iii h sides ara placed the glaal
frames wnich were formerly used oc
the old beds. When placed In this
manner, the sun shine Into the tent
from some direction at all times of
day. Tho rldgo wire H stretched from
one center post to the other; then ex
tending from one side to tho other
across thla ridge wire every four feet
Is a rope, and every ten feet a wire
Mr. Pelmer saya If ho were to build It
over, he would place rope every two
or three feet. In dry weather the
tent tends to sag, but when It rains
or In damp weather the ropes tighten
and hold the top of tho teut well In
position.
