The Firt Cow.
The "cow ordinance went into eftVct
last Tursdav and the marshal picked up
the cow of Charley Scott the' ti rut day.
Till cow was one that Mr. Specht, til
Sauvie Ialand dairyman had bargained
for and Charley did not claim her. Mr.
Spcht took her out of s-ik. The talk of
fighting t'e ordinance ha become
general in t lie runt few daya and it seem
very likely that a teat cam will b made
of the matter. Such a t ource would be
foolish In the extreme. Very probably
flaw will be found in the way t lint the
ordinance was adopted and it is not at
all unlikely that It could be knocked
out, aa it waa not published before the
elee'lou, but what would lie gained by
thia course? Thecouncil would pass the
ordinance over agsin, aa since t he ex
pression of opinion given by the voter
at the last election there is no doubt but
that the large majority deiirs that the
cows be kept from running at large in
the city and eipecially in the biaanes
part. The Aght and the expene and
trouble would only be watted an I cause
hard feeling, and since the the law ia
very evidently not atrong enough to
atand the teal we would recommend
that the council take the matter up and
pas another ordinance that will stand
the teat and make it. one that merely
keep the cows out of certain parts of the
town. There are other feature of the
present law also that are objectionable.

Two Fast Ball Games Here Last Sunday, in Which Ridge
field Is Defeated 10 to 1 and Lents 9 to 1. Also
A Few Snapshots of the Players in Action.
Everything waa aa it should he at the
baac ball grounda laat Sunday, and It
went very much St. Helen way. The
first victims were the boys from Ridge-
-field and despite tbe fact that they have
go id team sud played ball all the time
ihvy got lue email en 1 of a 10 to 1 score.
Virgil Steven of Scappooae wa in the
box for tue local aud liell the Vnitors
lo three lots.
Tlie game wa 8.. Helen ail tbe way
through. Austin wa tlie tint man up
Ti,iaai
Pitcher Smith Wound Up Like A
Io)lHr Watch
and oened with a clean amsh to the
fence for three bae, and when Perry
gets that fur around it is a cinch that he
will score. Kldgi-field got their lone ace
u the iirxt, Shuberl opening with a hit
and a sacrifice and an error putting him
acrosa .
Ijiw opened the second with a bit
and wa follow I by Owens with one
for two aack, Specht got a single,
scoring I. wa. Steven waa out, Leier
to O'Connor, Austin w.dked, but Owen
waa caught at the plate oti Terry's iu
rjcld hit. Nadeau knocked s long fly to
right Held, which the suffragette in
that (KMitioil dropped and allowed to go
clear to the fence and three more regis
tered. In Ridgeiicld's half of the third
Joe Specht the newcenti-r llehler, picked
a couple of long drives from the top of
the fence in a way tint won the hearts
of the fan.
The local got another run in the
third, one more in the fifth snd three in
ktay
Austin Aviated to Third
the sixth. Owing to the extra game for
the day theie were but six Innings so
the ten scores were sll that St. Helens
Could annex.
The second game, with the Lents
team waa almost the same atory, though
thev showed more class than Ridgefield.
Ford llenkel.the University of Oregon
star, wss pitching for the local boys and
the big left bander bad'it on the Tort
land youngsters all the time. He baa
lota of steam snd the beat control for a
south paw that we have seen for a long
time, aa in the whole nine innings he
did not walk a man. The visitors got
two men on in the first, ss the first two
np came through with singles. One of
them was caught at third, the next man
droptxd a fly into Sam Owens ever
waiting glove nnd the next was a victim
of Henkel's lenders.
Nadeau wss a hern in tills rbap'er,
putting a long drive over the fence.
The second opened with a hit by Laws,
Owens followed with another, and then
Mansgir Edison I. Ballagh. stepped to
the plate for the first time. What
happened? Ed pat one to the fencs and
GETS TWO
clesred bases. And tbst I the wsy it
went. They could not do anything
with Henkel's pitching sad the locals
knocked the ball all over the lot. Lents
annexed their only one in the seventh
when each of the first two men up got a
two bagger. The visitors plsyed a fast
fielding game, but were not in tbe run
ning when it came to getting the tallies
snd st the finish tbe score board showed
s sad condition ol affairs, and we had
the best of it 9 to 1.
Next Sunday the manager aays will
see a local team representing St. Helena.
Slat Stebic wa certainly there a hen
it came to getting the hot ones around
the Brst sack.
Young Stevens wss the surprise of the
day. Il takea pretty good work to gei
through a 8atne 1 ke that with only three
bit against you. Never once did be
weaker:.
Joe Specht has a homeain St. Helens.
Two bits out of three trips to the plate
and when it comes to getting tlie hard
ones he has it over any center fielder we
ever bad.
Smith, the Ridgefield pitcher, was ss
wild as a March hare, whatever that is.
He haa lots of steam and curves, but
cannot do anything with them.
In the six inning game with Ridge
field the boys got 14 bits and in the
game with Lents 11 hit. Any team
that geti the best of them now will have
to pile up a good sized bunch of runs.
It was Fly Time for Owens
Hcnkel was all to tbe good snd it is
ton bad that he cannot be here all season
lint six safe ones were secured from his
delivery, and st no time was there much
danger of the visitors getting very much.
The boys have sll hit their stride and
there will be no more 24 to 2 games
played here. If the Red men had been
here lat Sunday instead of the week
before there would have been something
doing in the wsy of a good game.
The Montaviila Cubs will be here
next Sunday. This is probably the fast
est independent team around Tortland
aud is the same bunch that lowered our
colors last yesr. A game with them is
sure to be a fast auj good one.
Clatskanie got the best of the Gill
Butchers of Portland last Sunday while
the Rainier team took the Kalama boys
into camp. Keep your eye on the Clats
kanie boys. They are a bunch of comers
and all home youngsters and tbsir baset
bll record for this year will be mostly
a story of victories. They play here a
week from Sunday.
Delay Costs Money.
It ia certainly true in the case
of Railroad Addition lots, for
after May 1st all lots will be ad
vanced 10 per cent. Come out
Sunday or before and make your
selection. Our agent, A. T.
Laws, is ready to go out with
you, and it takes only 15 min
utes easy walking to get to this
coming part of St Helens.
Make a Small Deposit
on any unsold lot in Railroad Ad
dition and we will hold the lot
for you a reasonable length of
time, until you can make the
regular payments. Do this be
fore May 1st, as prices on all un
sold lots will then be advanced.
