Leaving the question of discovery
perhaps forpver undetermined, we do
know that Thomas de HerlnnKn, third
bishop of rannma, was the first Eu
ropean to sluht the CalnpHKoa, on tha
10th of March, 1535. Thla exploring
prelate la also credited with being re
sponsible for the Introduction of
bananas Into the western continent.
Ills discovery of the Unlapngna
tslnndi was quite accidental and came
about during a voyngo from I'anama
to l'eru, whither he had been sent to
report on the doings of I'liarro, for
the worthy bishop enjoyed the; confi
dence ot hla king. The good bishop
waa a scientist ai well aa a church
man, and he determined tha exact lat
itude and longltudo of the archipela
go: but he gave no namo to the group,
and after a stay of ten days turned
tho prow of his hlp toward 1'ora.
Tho archlpelngo now waa well known
to the Spanish niarlnera, and for rea
sons already suggested were called
the Knchnnted Isles. Inirlng the pe
riod of revolution against Spanish au
thority In South America the Islands
were much used by tha privateers
that preyed on Spanish commerce.

when the Re nadorean government for
mally took poesesslon of the group. It
Ih curious to note that this act of oc
cupation wus Inspired v by a North
American, a Loulslunliirr named VII
liimll, who left his native territory
when It came under the Jurisdiction ot
the Culled States.
Aa already stated, the indigenous
11 ri I mill 111 it of the archlix-lago Is In I'k
way pcrhapa tlio most Interesting In
the world. When I)arwln first vlrlted
thu Islands he determined 20 distinct
species of land birds, 25 of which were
foudd nowhere else In be world, ana
since that time other naturalists, who
have studied this feature, claim that
there are 08 peculiar specie, and s
slbly more. Iiarwln put forward the
b.vxthfKl thut all of these aro de
scended from a single species, having
been modified In form and color dur
ing the course of ages.
Of the reptiles, the most Interesting
are the turtles and lizards. The for
mer, the Culapugoa, are found no
where else, and at one time literally
swarmed over the Islands. They were
huge, measuring sometimes three feet
from the breast shell to the dome of
the back; slow of movement, making
about four miles a day when walking;
long, thin necks and curiously small
heads and broad flat fluppers; their

considerable difficulty could only find

but latterly a combination of circum
stance are working for their complete
extinction.
Tho turtles yield a peculiar quality
of oil that can be used lu place of
lard. The medium-sized ones contain
from Ave to six gallons of this prod
uct, worth about 75 conta, gold, per
gallon, and as It Is a very simple mat
ter to extract the oil. It Is eaHlly seen
how the turtle hunters would pursue
their calling until they had complete
ly exterminated thl remarkable rep
tile. The dogs that roam the Islands
have also contributed to the destruc
tion ot the turtles.
The Ecuadorean government has
several times begun negotiations for
the disposition of tho Islands, and as
far back as 1851 the preliminaries ot
transfer were arranged with the
I'nlted Slates, the sum offered being
$3,000,000 for the right of collecting
the guano that could bo found on the
Islands. For various reason tho deal
fell through, nnd while since that
time tentative negotiations have been
commenced during different adminis
trations, no definite agreement hus
ever teen reached

SAVE EEST HENS FOR MATING
I Leg Band and Trap Nest Are Almoit
Indispensable for Success
Care of Flock.
The reason Is approachlrt? when
the ioultry keeper will be gin to pick
out his beet birds for the next sea
son's matlngs. None but the best
should be used In the breeding peM.
and If tho breeder has hatched eggs
from bis best hens of last season he
Is reasonably sure of some good
birds. If a breeder la trying for per
fectlon In any form, the leg band and
the trap nest are almout Indispens
able. The enroful breeder can estimate
very closely the value of the young
stock for future breeders. He knows
the good and bad points of each of his
birds, and has mated to overcome
defects and Improve points already
good. Every year he Is nearer perfec
tion, and every year greater care Is
taken of the flock, for be has learned
the value of cleanliness and proper
food. Insects will never sap the life
or bis flock and kill the vitality of
his breeders. Tainted food or water
never reaches them, everything Is
fresh, pure and clean. They have
plenty of room In their winter quar
ters, and be provides exercise by
throwing the grain In chaff on the
floor. He does this In the evening
' after they have gone to roost, and
they have had their breakfast long
before he has had his own morning
meal.
After he has learned the right way
and got a fairly good start, the work
Is easy and pleasant, and seems to
swing along without any difficulty.
As In everything else. It Is the begin
ner who experiences the difficulties,
for he has very little knowledge to be
gin with, and often pays dearly for
the knowledge he acquires, but It
does not take long to understand the
most essential points in poultry keep
ing. One must keep on learning,
however, there should be no standing
still; every day Pomethlng helpful
may be learned, and tt Is well to keep
