OUR PORTLAND LETTER
Remarkable Advance in Prices Paid to
Farmer for Foodstuffs.
Portland, Or., March 14. After
careful ami exhaustive study of maiKat
condition in the Pacific Northwest tiur
inir the Peat eiuht years, President
Harvey Heck with, of the Portland Com
tuerclal Club, make th ttartllng stale
mailt that price paid to farmer for
eleven different article of food, all n
ceesltles, advanred 31.4 per cant be
' tween April, HMi2,and Ortolier 11)10, and
be back up hi statement by quotation
from market report ublli.li.Hl In Port
Jand ilurli)i that period.
"These lljcures," Haid President Beck
with, "IndicaU that Portland i a hlK.li
priced market for farm produce, and the
high price are directly chargeable to
the great increase in coniumptiun over
production. The demand of a rapidly
growing population have more than kept
pace with the Increase in the quantity
of teential foodstuffs tent to market by
the farmer of the date, and thi condi
tion I one that I not likely to be
changed for a long time, if ever, and tbe
ituatlon i very inviting one to the
producer.
"In the table of price submitted here
with art two Item to which I desire to
call particular attention egg and poul
try. There it no (food teuton why tbe
Pacific Northwest khonld not produce
egge and chicken enough to fully up
ply the local demand and thui relieve tbe
wholesaler from the'nccetiity of order
ing carload after curload from the Middle
west. There i absolutely no danger of
overproduction In theiie linen, in fact,
there i little prospect that the supply
will ever exceed, or even equal the de
ma rid.
"Let nt assume that there are 5.000
farmer in Oregon and that at the pre
ent time each fanner i keeping an aver
age ol 20 hens. It i probably fair to
CNtlmate that each hen will raie, during
the coming summer, a brood of ten
cbirken and during the balance of the
year will lay 12 doxen egx. The chick
en should certainly be worth bO cent
each when ready for market, and the
' egjr will sell at a minimum price of Vi
cent per dozen, a total of f H 00, and the
farmer still haa the ordinal hen. An
addition of only one hen by each farmer,
on thi ltli, aill amount to f 10,000 an
nually ami, if given the time and atten
tion thi important industry deserves,
the net return from the xii!try yard
of the state may eaitily exceed those from
the wheat field."
A banquet In the Portland Commercial
Club during the put week wa attended
by over SIX) men and women, more or lea
directly Interested in the dairy interests
of the state. Speeches were made by
0. C. Chapman, representing the Com
mercial Club, T. 3. Townxcnil, represent
ing the creamery Interest, lr Andrew
C. rml'h, of the State Hoard of Health,
Prof. K. I- Kent, dean of the driry depart
ment of the Oregon Agricultural College,
W. W. Cotton, representing1 the Ilarrimsn
system, and other, and the subject was
discussed In all Its bearings. At the
Close of the meeting a committee was
appointed to formulate plant under
which the various Interests could be
brought together for future practical and
effective eo-oiertion.
