OUR COUNTY'S GROWTH
The census of Oregron, just made
public by the United States Census
Bureau, gives Columbia County a
population of 10.5S0, as against
6,237 in 1900. This is a very sat
isfactory showing and places us,
in point of population, in the
middle rank of the counties of
.the State, our population being
less than that of seventeen others
and greater than sixteen. Very
few counties show as large a pro
portionate increase, and we have
added more population than Ba
ker, Benton, Clackamas, Clatsop,
Curry, Gilliam. Grant, Harney,
Josephine, Lake, Lincoln, Linn,
Malheur. Morrow. Polk, Sher
man, Tillamook, Umatilla. Union,
Wallowa, Wasco or Wheeler, be
ing exceeded in growth by only
nine counties of the State. This
is a magnificent showing and one
which foretells a great future for
this section. It is the more re
markable because of the fact that
this is a heavily timbered county
and its great resources have
never been thoroughly adver
tised. The first exhibit of our
resources was made by the editor
of the Mist at the 1905 Portland
Fair, and since that time the
county has been represented ev
ery year at the State Fair at
Salem. That these showings
have brought good results there
is no doubt, and we believe by
far the greater portion of the
county's growth dates from the
Portland Exposition. We have
never failed to attract a great
deal of attention at the fairs,
though perhaps our greatest tri
umph was at the Alaska-Yukon
Exposition, when our exhibit of
grains gathered by Mr. W. J. Ful
lerton won the Grand Prize. The
present editor of the Mist was
the first as far back as 1SS5. to
print and circulate at his own
expense a pamphlet advertising
Columbia County, and we think it
can be truthfully stated that the
Mist and its editor have been the
leaders in this work. The book
circulated at the Alaska-Yukon
Exposition contained a writeup
of this county contributed by us,
and our articles have been made
the basis of every railroad, real
estate or other pamphlet describ
ing Columbia County. The forth
coming New Year issue of the
Oregonian will have a three
column illustrated article from
the same source, and all who
wish to see our population many
times larger before the next r.a
tional census is taken would do
well to send for copies and dis
tribute them where they will do
the most good.
Let every citizen do his share.
Revive the commercial bodies.
Get a move on. Hustle and advertise.

When you talk of the hi$rh cost

think that today it takes less

This is the real test of the

thousand shingles in a day, and
