Union Wants Branch Asylum.
Union. Union Is preparing to pre
test Its claims to the state commis
sion (or the location of the branch
Insane asylum, to be placed at either
Union, Baker or Pendleton. Within
(0 days from the time the governor
declares the bill a law the location
will be made. This place will claim
ft central location, tine sqil, pure wa
ter, a temperate climate, slate land
already bought and other advantages.
Reclaim Umatilla Land.
Hermlston. The large seepage
lakes on the Umatilla Irrigation pro
ject, near here, are to be drained, re
, claiming about 400 acres of good land.
Tola work is to "be done by the gov
ernment under the supervision of E.
P. Dodd. While a large part of the
water la to be drained off in ditches,
the balance will be removed with
pumps and used to Irrigate additional
lands.

The funeral of Walter Cox took
plate last Sunday mo uing at 11
o'clock In the Epi' copal Cluuch, lli v.
Mr. I'oUsof 1'ortl.ind reading the beauti
ful s rvii-e of that denomination. Tbe
burial was in tbe Masonic cemetery at
lierinany Hill. The attendance was
very large, romprisinit nearly all of the
older residents of St. Helens, who had
known Walter from his childhood and
were sincere sympathizers with hi
parents.
Wiiliam (.irmit, aged T2, died at the
home of his brother, James Grant, of
this cilv. and was buried Sunday in the
iVld Fellows' cemetery at Varru, mem
bersof the Bl ckniakers' I mon acting
as pallbearers. Mr. Grant had been a
resident of St. Helens since September
last, and the most of that time he suf
fered from heart trouMe and kidney dis
ease, which terminated in his drath.
Kev. Mr. Heist of the M. E Church
preaching (he funeral seivice. Mr. and
Mrs. Grant desire to thank the people of
this community for their kiuduets dur
ins their brother's eu-kness and far the
large attendance at the funeral.
The plat of Railroad addition to St.IIel
ens was tiled with the County Clerk to
day. This is tite property recently
bought by the St. Heieus Improvement
Company and adjoin the city, lying
lietween Columbia Paik and the North
ern Pacific Railroad. The Improve
ment Company now have force of a
dozen men clearing the streets and lots,
and as coon ther make sutlicienl head
way, a force of men will follow to put
down sidewalk. The amount being ex
pended in improvements oa the tract,
and further plans under advisement,
seem to indicate that the o antra of the
tract have abounding faitii in the gowth
of St. Heleus. In leaking of the mat
ter t day Mr. A. T. Laws, Vice I'resi
dent of the Improvement Company,
stated that he had len very much sur
pris d at the iutere-t teken in the addi
tion, not only by St. Helens people, but
by many people from a distance, and
expressed the opinion that it would be
only a short t'.oie before all of the lots
were sold, there beirg only 130 lots in
tiie addition. The work of clearing is
going on rapidly ar,d the Company
hopes to throw open the tract to the
public "some time not', week, due an
