St. Helens new city hall, the finest
public building b -tween Portland and

the finest in any ci'y in Oreg.n of any

formally opened last Wednesday n'glit
by a reception and ball given to one
citizens by Mr. II. F, McCormi k of the
the St. Helens Mill Company, There
were 2o0 invitations issued and that
many people at least will have a
pleasant remembrance of Mr.
McCormick's hospitality. Excellent
music for the danc .rs, card tables for
the older set, and light n-fr. shinents
were the program. The dicoiaiions
were beautiful, cousisting of small Chi
nese lanterns illuminated by electric
lights, and taste.'ully ananged ferns and
evergreens. Ih council chamber was
used for the cird tables and qnite a nuin
b.-r dnssed the evening very pleasantly
there. Not since St. Helens celebrated
the building of tin new court house has
there been so pleased an a's-mblage oi
our p ople, and Mr. McCormick's public
spirit and bos: itality were very heartily
commended. 1'rai.e of the beauty and

Tiiero was no formal program or set

MOTHER'S VISIT.
The
Old . Lady Meant Weil, but She
Got a Severe Shock.
An old fashioned woman from tbe
country recently packed some fried
chicken, bread and doughnuts In a
market buxket nod went to see her
daughter, who lives in a big city. She
was scandalized when the famtiy stay
ed up till 11 o'clock and decided that
she wouldn't tell pa about it when she
wrote home uest day. "He might.
think wo have fallen Into evil ways,"
she said to herself as she was going
off to sleep.
She awoke at ber usual time. 4
o'clock, aud the bouse seemed strange
ly quiet. "Town folks do get lazy,"
she thought, "aud they probably don't
get up till 5." She dressed and went
downstairs and watched the clock un
til o. Not a souud. Then she waited
till C, aud ut 7, between hunger and
alarm. v she was almost crazed.
They've been, murdered In their
bedsl" she yelled at 8 o'clock from the
front steps. And soou the house was
filled with peot.de rus'oing in to so
wkut had bnjueed.
The family were Burprised and In
dignant when police, market garden
ers, newsboys, etc, rushed into their
bedrooms and woke them up. And
this explains why the old fashioned
woman came homo that day. ''1 never
expected," she sobbed to pa, "that any
girl would talk to her ma as Jane talk
ed to me." Atchison Globe.

several outbreaks of Kllauea In the
last hundred years. In 1S40 there was
a brilliant eruption of lava, tbe light

Where tbe lava flowed through the

burning away the wood within and
killing the upper part of the tree. In

A Coin Worth Millions.
Somewhere In the world possibly
among the relics' kept by some lover of
the great Napoleon there is fortune,
perhaps unsuspected. Among the coins
Napoleon had minted were some mil
Hons of five franc pieces, and he deter- i
mined to popularize these in an ex- !
trnordlnary way. In one of the coins, 1
folded to a tiny size, was Inclosed a i
note signed by Napoleon and promts- j
Ing the sum of 6,000,000 franca to the
finder of that particular coin. Nat- I
orally everybody who changed a large
piece demanded the new five franc i
coins in exchange and, aa a rule, prob- j
ed and dug and sounded tbe metal In '
eager search for the hidden note. But j
the year went on, and yet the note :
did not appear. Napoleon's plighted 1
