EASTERN MAIL ORDER "MELON."
After the assembly adjourned
in Portland the Mist expressed
the opinion that it'was a farce.
The result justifies us and places
the blame for the 'success of the
Bourne-Chamberlain combination
upon the menwho were re
sponsible for the calling of the
Assembly. They played into the
hands of Jonathan Bourne and
George Chamberlain. Had there
been no assembly the Republican
nominee would have been elected.
though we have no doubt he
would have been just as bitterly
opposed by Jonathan Bourne as
was Mr. Bowerman. The comb
ination between Democrats and
Republicans is nothing new, and
Mr. Bourne is merelv patterning
after Senator Mitchel in his
methods. He is a shrewd politi
can and understands how to take
advantage of popular measures.
Believing that no assembly candi
date could be elected' his as
sociates, (doubtless under his in
structions) shaped matters so as
to insure the nomination of the
assembly candidate. There were
three anti-assembly candidates
for the nomination.' Mr. Hofer.
' Mr, Abrahams and Mr. Dimick.
Mr. Dimick was the first to an
nounce his candidacy, and had
there been no interference on
the part of the Jonathan Bourne
clique, Dimick would now be
Govenor-elect. But Senator
Bourne did not want to see
Dimick elected. He knew he
could not use Grant Dimick in
his senatorial camnaien two
years from now. It would be
much better for him to have the
Democrats win. Therefore a
meeting waa held in the private
office of Postmaster Merrick in
the city of Portland. The editor
of the Mist was in Portland the
day the meeting was held and
was invited by Col. Hofer to
attend,' it being represented to
him that the meeting was in
the interest of the direct primary
candidates. There were present
at that meeting Postmaster
Merrick, W. S. U'Ren, Frank
Sinnott, Messrs. Orton. Hofer,
and Flagg. It soon developed
that all present, with the ex
ception of the Mist editor and
Mr. Abbott, were there for the
purpose of advoncing the candi-j
dacy of Col. Hofer, thereby in- J
sunng the nomination of Jay
Bowerman, the assembly candi
date. Hofer was advised by
Postmaster Merrick to come to
Portland and open headquarters,
and when he claimed he could
not afford the expense the Post
master asured him the money
would be provided. It was a
Bourne conspiracy against the
Direct Law Primary, and it has so
far succeeded. As to whether
it will result in Senator Bourne's
re-election remains to be seen.
If the Republican faction that
called the assembly abandons its
opposition to the will of
