Last Monday Game Warden Floeter
and a companion in the ciudIov of the
State ol Oregon came into town with
ieorge liieloh and son Chester in cu-
ody, charging tin in with having in
their possesion a deer the sex of which
they had disguised, all of which is
ferninst tho peace and dignity and in
violation of the laws of the State of Ore
gon. And back ol this Iber is a pretty
good little story. Tho Itielohs acre
hunting in company with Peter Lou-
iguont of Scappoote, and when they
eft the Scappoose country and went into
the Nehalem Fred Floeter thought it
would be a good idea fo. hi in to go over
the mountains, too. When Fred got
into the valley and found that Pete and
his companion had gone duwn the river
he thought tli-elk around Saddle Mount
ain were wh.i. t.iey were after, and as it
is the 1 i-ed season on elk Fred hit it up
for the lower Nehalem. Hut the hunters
had no notion of g ling so far away, and
when they got to Mist they backtracked
across the burn nil I returned to Ver
nonia, where we are informed that they
enjoyed several days of good hunting
while Floeter wms wearing out shoe
leather around Middle Mountain. But
altera lew day ;ent in fruitless search
Fred, who is the 1 vest (iame Warden in
the State ol Oregon, hustled back up the
river and met the Itielohs on their way
out ol t'"- valley. When brought before
.t'istice V.'atkins tiny were released on
il.t-ir putting up a car'i bind of f 1 00, and
the rase aas set for Wednesday, but on
ou Wednesday it w:is igiin postponed.

The I'.ritir-b ship Claverdon is transfer
inga partial cargo of California redwood
from the steam schooner Nehalem. The
San Francisco Eiaininer has the follow
ing to say of the Nehalem's cargo of
red woo J.
One ol the largest and most valuable
cargoes of red.oai lumher exported
from Humboldt ltay in the last seven
years, bound to South Abica, will be
taken on the Hammond Company steam
er Nebalein, to be delivered in the Co
lumbia river to ships that will carry it
to II dest. nation. The Nebalein i now
taking on about 600,000 feet of rough

ber, or, more exactly, 470,000 feet in
timbers from 10 te Z leet long, and from
2x12 inches, cross section, to 20x20
inches. The total value of the cargo i
placed at approximately f ltf.OOO. Water
Iront men are n jw wondering whether
or rot tlie ship wiil be cleared at this
port or fiom the Columbia river. All
are of the opinion that Humboldt bsy
should receive the credit of this ship
ment in the records ol the cuntoin house.
The last big shipment of redwood for
South Africa was made on the Oeriimn
bark Henry, March, 1113, carrying 034,.
000 feet of lumber, and on the bark Oxo,
Fehiuary, ltsj.'l, carrying 570,000 feet.
These were full cargoes, the vessels being
small.
The Claverdon will also take 1,000,000
feet of fir from the St. Helens Mill Com
pany for South Africa. The Claverdon
carries 2,500,000.
The .team schooner Yellowstone of
the McCormick Line came intojhe river
snd will take some HO0.000 feet to Cali

room it will have to get its load some
where else on the river, probably at
