THE STATE FAIR.
The editor of The Mist desires
to thank all those that aided by
their contributions in making Co
lumbia County's exhibit at the
State Fair a great success. In
tludtxl in this number are Caton
Brothers, Mr. Brown and Mr.
. Schneiter of Sauvies Island; Mr.
! ' Hej?ele. Asa Holladay and Mr.
Miller of Scappoose; Mr. Lloyd
of Deer Island. Yankton Grange,
Natal and Goble Grange; James
McDonald of Clatskanie, and very
many others throusrhout the coun
ty. We think it is fair to claim
the exhibit was far better than
last year, and in point of quality
was not excelled by any. In
... awards, it w siren fourth pre
, !un-below Eer.ton, Douglas
, and Polk, and above Clackamas
; and Clatsop. This is as high a
position as we could expect to
achieve with an appropriation of
only $400. Yet it was the general
opinion,' quite freely expressed,
, that Colombia should have been
I givpn third place. In variety
and quality of fruit shown this
t. county took the lead, showing
1 Graveniitein apple3 measuring 14
inches in circumference, beauti-
fully colored, sound and clean.
They wsre from Mr. Miller at
Scaypot.se. l.lr. Asa Ho'laday's
.;. shov. ;n - was, as it always is, thej
' best from a commercial stand-
point ot any in tne pavilion, lhe
- exhibit made by Yankton Grange
.was clearly entitled to and will
receive the award of ?20 for the
5 best Grf ;.?e exhibit, as it far out
' clawed in quantity andvariety the
exhibits from Natal and Goble
Granges. Mr. Louis Rosasco, the
St Helens gardener, is entitled
to special mention for his liber
ality. " His showing of garden
products was a great help, includ
the biggest cabbages and crook-
neck squashes in the pavilion.
There ware quite a number of
visitors rom Columbia County,
including Messrs. Tarbell of
Yankton, Peterson of Mist, Tich
enor and Oonyers of Clatskanie,
Lloyd of Deer Island, Charles
Muckle, William and Edwin lioss
of St. Helens, and as to
whether the county wasefficient
' ly represented we refer our read
ers to them.

the old system are reactionaries

very few mourners. Under that
system the boss or leader main
tained his sspremacy by trickery.
Under the new system he must
submit his claims for leadership
to the people. Your vote tomorrow
is as important as any you have
ever east Scan your ballot care
fully and mark it correctly.
A LITTLE FACT.
Mr. Lafferty, who is trying to
split the Republican vote at tht
primary election, pays no taxes,
and who has been a resident of
this State only about four years.
and who has mad the money he
is spending in this campaign by
starting hundreds of useless and
expensive suits, asks your vote
tomorrow.
So does C. J. Reed, who has
lived in Oregon thirty years, pays
a goodly amount of taxes (though
he is not a rich man), and has
held office for five years with
credit to himself and in the in
terests of good government, and
was the chief assistant of Heney
in prosecuting the Oregon land
frauds.
