Y anhinjjton Careful, though umiffi

thirteenth census on cities thus far
announced reveals that the increased
rate of urban growth for the last de
cade over that of to 1900 has
been confined largely to places having
a population of less than 50,000,
While universally there has been a
healthy increase, in a large majority
of cities exceeding 60,000, the rate of
the previous decade has not been main
tained. In no instance so far has an
actual loss of population been shown
and present comparisons are only on
the rate of growth.
The population of 6.1 cities of more
than 25,000 has been officially announ

one-fourth of the estimated total num
ber of such cities in the country

with 465,766, an increase of 63.0 per

A decidedly better average is shown
for the nine cities whose population
range Between 200,000 and 400,000.

Denver, 213,381; St Paul, 214,744;

groww amounted to 33.8, as compared
with an Increase of 26 per cent in the
1S90-1900 epoch. But this high aver
age is due in large measure to the ex

cities of the clsa. Denver scored s
growth of almost 60 per cent, as com
pared with a little more than 25 per

Kansas City, almost 52 per cent, as
