Local stiowem in PortUmt and vicin
ity Sunday, Aug. 2H. put an end to one
of the longeat dry spell in the. hinuiry
of Oregon and at the samu time
brought relief to the fin-fig liters en-
gsgvq in ine endeavor to overcome
conflagration in the diatricU between
Sandy and Mount Hood.
The showers extends! as far south in
the Willamette valley aa Kugene, but
the dry spell is still unbroken at Ki mo-
burg. South of that place and eiutt uf
liedford a light ahower fell in the Cra
ter forest district, where the wont
fires in the state prevail.
There were light showers at some
parta east of the Caxraiba, notably at
Walla Walla, where a 7o-day drouth
was broken. The sky is overcast and
more rain is expected.
It haa been 90 days since a real
shower fell in Portland. August 15
witnessed a mist which served to clear
the atmosphere. F.ighlonc-hundredtha
of an inch fell during the intermittent
storms of Sunday.
The rain foil in about the same quan
tities in the Mount Hood fire district
and will enable the memliers of the
state militia and cititens now on the
firing line to prevent the further
spread of the flames. It la well known
that lire run through the crowns only
when the atmosphere is dry, and the
humidity 'f the past few days is ex
pected to have almost a good an effect
on the fires as a good soaking. The
men on the ground can set their Are
hrvaka ami drive the flames back.
Albany received her first soaking in
67 days, the longest dry spell ever re
corded there. The last rain fell June
22. Report from Albany are that
tl, rainfall raualed that in Portland.
A light shower was experienced at
Eugene atniut noon, but ia believed
that heavy rain fell in the mountains
east of that city. Following the rain
the atmosphere cleared of the smoke
which haa been banging over the. city
and the fires burning in ue i aseaurs
