HOW funny;
A Washington paper prints the
following and the Oregonian
copies it into its good-boy col
umn: Anv legislator who goes to
Olvmnia next fall pledged to
vnfA fnr an unknown candidate
fnr United States Senator, for
pledges, if given at all, will be
given before the primary elec
tion, will violate his oath of of
fice; an oath that obligates him
to act in conformity with the
state constitution; and the state
constitution provides for the
election of a United States Sen
ator by the State Legislature as
a whole, and not by individual
members hampered with ante
election pledges.
Must be a funny old constitu
tion they have over in Washing
ton, to provide for the election
of United States Senator by the
State Legislature "as a whole.
Over here it takes only a bare
majority, and, as to its being
perjury for a candidate for the
Legislature to pledge himself to
vote for his party's choice, the
Oregonian ought really to be
ashamed of itself for copying
such hogwash. No wonder there
are insurgents and that the voters
refuse to be led by such brain
less nonentities.
And now comes a democratic
candidate for Congress in the
State of Washington and an
nounces that in his opinion there
is no difference between a Jef
ferson Democrat and a Lincoln
Republican. He will probably be
handed a lemon with the assur
ance that its just the same as an
orange.

ST HELENS LOUGE NO. 32, A F &
A SI. Meets third Saturday in each j
month. Visiting brothers cordially
welcomed. U W Clark, Master; E E
Quick, Secretary.
If you want a scrap on your
hands get out on the street and
talk cow ordinance. The gentle
bovines have been the subject of
many a bitter dispute during the
past week.
The appointment of Governor
Hughes as Justice of ths Su
preme Court of the United States
will meet with almost universal
approval, and the . criticism by
Mr. Bryan of Hughes' veto of
the two-cent carfare bill is un-
: just and shallow. It muy bei
that Mr. Bryan would have
signed the bill. Theoretically he
; is a demagogue, but we doubt if
he would put his theories in jirac-
- tice should the opportunity offer.
Hughes is a true reformer, and
i3 not swayed by momentary im-
. pulses or a desire to catoh the
ears of the groundlings. Ha will
do justice by all- rich or poor,
and the only regret as to his ap
pointment is that it removes him
from his present field of useful
ness. mmmmmmm
" Secretary Ballinger announces!
that "if he lives long enough" j
Collier's Magazine will suffer all
the penalties the law will war
rant. We heartily hop;j the
: same may prove true of Mr. Bal
linger, the Guggenheimers, and
all his other friends who are en
gaged in the work of risaking
" millions out of the natural re
sources of the country by the
system of legal spoliation Socre-!
tary Ballinger has aided in. There
is no corrupt motive that can be
urged against the stand taken
by GifTord Pinchot, and if he
erred in his theories his errors
were upon the side of the people
and his enemies are the people's
enemies. The Oregonian's pre
diction that he would sink into
obscurity will not be fulfilled.

TOP AND BOTTOM WEAR
No matter if the suit of clothes you have on is the product of
the best tailors in the world, you will not look dressed up if your
hat and shoes do not correspond with it. On the contrary if your
hat and shoes are neat appearing and stylish, a very ordinary suit
of clothes will look good. That's why we have made a siwialty
hats and shoes. The proof is in our show windows this week.
