ELIZABETH PERRY'S FUNERAL
Aad a Vary tntafwbaf Latter From j
FriaeMl of Oar Sixty Yean.
The funeral of Mr. Elisabeth lVrry.
which occurred at the Methodist church
at Hoollon on Wednesday, April 13, wa
attended by a much greater number of
people than could gain admittance to
the building;, and they came from all
part of Columbia County and from
many distant points, drawn together by
an earnest desire to pay tbe List tribute
or respect to their good friend. Rev.
Brnce WoWerton, the pioneer Christian
minister of this County, who conducted
babtisnial services here over forty yean
ago, and who was an intimate friend of
Mrs. Perry, conducted the funeral cer
vices. The floral offerings were very
beauititul and choice, rare cala lillies
covering the coffin. In addition to the
relatives thosecontribtiting flowers were:
Mr. aud Mrs. Geo. W. McBride, Congre
gational LadieV Aid of Umveritv Pnrk,
Mr. and Mr. V. H . Dolman, B. F. Gilt
ner and familv, J. Kendal Blaketley,
Mr. and Mr. M. J. Scott, Mr. and Mrs.
Barcliard. Mr. and Mr. G. F. Handiy,
. and one of beautiful wild flowers from
the children of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. La
niont. Of peculiar interest at this time to
those who knew Mrs. Elisabeth Perry is
the following letter from Mrs. Jane K.
, Smith, of Astoria, who liaJ enjoyed her
trienUhip over sixty years. It as re
ceived by Mr. N. A. Perry the day after
Iiia mo'.tier s death :

Mr. X. A. Perry, Houltoo, Oregon :
My Dear Friend:
I am to sorry to hear of the sick' ess
of my lifelotig friend, your mother. Hie
stopped off and spent a day with me on
ber list trip to the seaside. She so
eprv, and mentally to me she seemed a
wonder. Oh, it was a happy day we
spent together. She had so many kind
remarks to make ol all our oldtiune
friends, to charitable in her feeling
toward her neighbors, so considerate of
all: As she was leaving the house she
turned to me and mv, "Whit wcrd are
you f-'otng to send to Dellta Kelly?" 1

of tifir oltl age?
My liist recollection of Elizabeth Cra ri
del Perry as ill Jloomingtcn, Iowa, in
my lather honse. hlie came to ste me
just about the time your parents started
ior Oregon. It was not long after they
were married ami i uunK I was about
five years old. This is the pic iuie I have
in my mind: Mie was sitting in a rock
ing ciiair, a'td I was attracted just as
close as I could get to her, leaning on
tbe arm of the chair, looking up iatn
her fuee, thinking how sweet and pretty
she looked as she was talking to me, I
got closer and closer until 1 got my toes
pinched under the rocker. At this inter
view I fell in love with her and have
been in love with her ever since.
We came to Oregon in '47, and in 'V.f,
while yourfather, my father, and Uncle
Ham Kinney were aone to the mines in
California, Sister Perry, with her ha be
Frank, stayed at Uncle ?atu', a half
mile from oar home. Theu, in this thin
ly fettled country, where pioneers were
all like "kinfolks," as we western peo
ple used to nay, though we sometimes
lived miles apart, we always "kept
track" of each oiher, and have for up
wards of sixty years, fche has always
possessed a beautiful, lovely character.

the peacemakers, for they shall see God." j

The ball season wa opened hete last
Sunday with all due lorniality, Mayor
Miller, of St. Helen, pitching the first
ball, and Mayor White, of Houltoo.try

virtnr for the locals, and was proof con
elusive that St. Helena has a winning
team this year. Brakke was invmciuie
and had the Portland boys at his mercy
all through the game. The only feature
ol the same was Austin's catch ot a

TOP AND BOTTOM WEAR
No matter if the suit of clothes you have on is the pnxluct of
the best tailors in the world, you will not look dressed up if your
hat and shoes do not correspond with it. On the contrary if your
hat and shoes are neat appearing and stylish, a very ordinary suit
of clothes will look good. That's why we have made a specialty
hats and shoes. The proof is in our show windowslthis week.
And our line of Gents'
Furnishings does not end
with hats and shoes. We
carry a line of dress and
work shirts that cant be
beat. Collars, Neckties.
