TO HOULTON VOTERS.
If you want an abundant sup
ply of pure water for irrigation,
' sewerage and fire protection vote
for consolidation. Without sew
erage your city will soon' become
too filthy to live in. If you put
in your own sewerage and water
system you will be deeper m debt

ALFALFA IN KANSAS.
Why Is alfalfa? And what is It
Perhaps the reader Is imbued with the
idea that a certain Populist Senator
from Kansas raised the Brat crop of
alfalfa to cover a receding chin. To
correct this erroneous impression, and
for other reasons, the Kansas Agri
cultural Department furnishes a pedi
gree for alfalfa that harks back to the
rerr gates "of Eden.
The Persians found it to be a valu
able plant, and when Xenes Invaded
Greece he carried a few bales of al
falfa along. Words were becoming
more plentiful by this time, and the
Greeks named it meJike. Next the
Romans obtained a supply from the
Greeks and re-christened It herba med
ico. During the Middle Ages, owing,
perhaps, to a change of textbooks In
the rural districts, the name was
chansed to lucerne, after a river of
North Italy.
To the Arabs, however, it became
known as al-facfacah, which really
meant "the best kiud of fodder." As
it became introduced into Spain,
France and Northern Europe, follow
ing the Invasion of the Moors, the
Arabian name was implanted, and
finally shortened to the Spanish alfalfa
for the convenience of future Kan-
s-iiis, to whom it came by way of the
. Levant.
In 1S91, according to the reort of
Secretary F. V. Coburu, of the Kansas
Agricultural Department, there were
but Zi.ZHi acres of alfalfa grown in
the state; in 1909 the area had in
creased to 992.6G3 acres, Jewell County
alone showing a total of 61,602 acres
in alfalfa, or nearly double the entire
acreape of the state in 1&91, when the
first statistics were obtained. Only
two crops grown in the state, wheat
and corn, exceed alfalfa in value.
There's nothing small or stingy
shout alfalfa. Perhaps that In why it
hunted up Kansas. It doesn't exact
the pound of flesh from the farmer's.
land just because it brings him libera!
returns. A similarity may be noticed
between the methods of alfalfa and of
Mr. Muldoon. who couducta the revital
izing farm for broken-down businesf
men in the East. Worn-out land and
"v.oru-out business men are given a
rest-curs consisting of heavier work
than they have ever done before, and
are at the Fame time benefited and
J made new. Undeveloped energy and
activity are brought out in either case.
Where alfalfa Is sown the roots pen
- etrate Hie soil to a depth of eight to
twenty feet, drawing moisture from
soneath the subsoil and supplying ni
trogen to the earth In return. Mineral
plant food is attracted to the upper
soil, where it is available for the surface-feeding
crops.
Wheat, cortt or oats, planted on alfalfa-sod
ground, will produce one
third to one-half larger yields than
that planted on udjoinlng land where
grain crops have preceded. No won
der ali'alfa Is already called the most
valuable Western crop. Several mill
ion bushels of grain raised annually
la the stale may well be credited to
the alfalfa fertilizer account in the
Kansas ledger. Alfalfa is developing
more pay dirt la Kansas than will
ever be found in Alaska, and it doesn't
run iu streaks; it is perfectly ueces
Bible, Hut activity below the surface does
not interfere In the least with the
growth of the alfalfa plant above the
ground. In lute May or early June,
when It has attained a height of ten to
eighteen Inches, and purple blossoms
begin to appear, alfalfa is ready for
tin; first cutting. New shoots imme
diately appear, (i ud every three or four
weeks', according to the season and the
JuUfineiU of the grower, (re8ji cut
tings ar made,
