FARMER DON'TGET I
Leaders of Equity Society Attrlb
ote High Prices to Dealers
FIGURES TELL STRAIGHT STOR
Paddina- la Put Into Valuta Afle
Product Leava Farm Dairy
men Expose Milk Dealer
Chicago, Feb, 8. "The farmer are
pot responsible for the high price of
food," was the statement tod or
0. Drayton, of Indianapolis, president
of the National Union, American So
ciety of Equity.
The farmer receive little more
than he did before the price of food
stuff soared to the skiee. From bog
to apple this is true. In every par
ticular is the farmer taking all the
risk of producing and getting , only
moderate price for his output.
"The dealer are Um one who are
responsible for the high cost of living
nd ws prvptee to show that It cannot
be laid at the door of the farmer," as Id
Mr. Drayton before the convention of
the Milk Producer' atsoc at ion. Tbe
legate are meeting with the determ
ination to form a national organisa
tion for the protection of the farmer in
hi dairy and other product.
"I am hero to give facta," said Air,
Drayton. "Let the responsibility rest
where it belongs, but it doesn't .belong
on the farmer s shoulders."
One of the fact cited was tbe price
of $1 and lees paid to the farmer for
1908 Wheat ard Its ns tn 11.60 When
it reached the hands of tbe speculator.
"Why, on of my correspondent, con
tinned Mr. Drayton, "sold 2,000 bush
els of the 1908 crop for 73 cents, and
that same wheat afterward soared to
the $1.60 mark."
bonator W. r. Kondebrison, repre
senting the Tri-State Dairy association
of Indiana, Kentucy and Ohio, told the
delegate how the organization which
he represents managed to bring
dealer into line.
"We found," said Mr. Rondebrii
' that the producer of this territory
were getting but 8 or 10 cents gallon
for milk that tbe dealer were aelling
for 8 renti a quart, and it Koked as if
it we time to go to work, and so we
did. We formed our association and
thee dealer paid no attention to our
demands, so we didn't send any milk to
market.
"We kept this up all during the
month of August, until the buyer saw
that we mra.it business and they offer
ed u from l to 16 cents a gallon, so
we begun marketing cur milk again,
I find that the average producer all
over tbe country now ge' 14 cent in
the winter and 11 cent in the summer,
so you can see for yoursleves who gets
the profit at 8 cents a quart to the con
sumer.
Fcod Fight Test Now On.
New York, Feb. 8. With extreme
cold weather tending to drive quota

New York and New Jersey renewed
activities in the campaign. Attorney

voke an old injunction against tbe
packing companies granted in the Su
preme court in 1902 and forbidding
tbem from fixing meat prices and pre
venting competition by agreement as
to rates and supply.
Regulative ordinance introduced in
the New York board of aldermen and
imed practically at cold storage evils
are to be pressed for passage.
