HOW DO THE COCSTRY FEOFLE
LIKE IT ?
There are three incorporated cities
rolnmhia Countv. an-1 they contain
rtenrlv all the saloons in the county
These cities have, a population of not
over 3,500 people, while the rest of the
connty ha sbnnt 7.000 people. The re
venue from these saloons goes to the
cities and is used ly them for street
imnrm-emnt. salaries, etc. This, it IS
said (though ineorreclly) vs the pav.
merit of considerable tax. and, thereore

the entire conr.tr. Possibly sots of the
f.traiers will think of this when they (ro
to the polls on the second day of Nov
ember. 'At'leait wont appeal to them
very ftroncly ss sn'arjrnment in favor of
the saloon bnsineei. Nor should it ap
peal to anyone If youjbelieve the sa
loons help make good cititeris; if yon
believe they are an influence for good
in the community, and you want your
children to frequent them just as soon
as the law permits, then vote to retain
them. But if youbelievethevaieinjcrious
in all their tendencies, areoo going to I
bribed by the license money into voting
for them?

A number of the officials of the A.
C. and North Hank Roads were In the

the the controversy in regard to mac
dsmiiing Water street. As no sstis
faetorv arrangements could be made,
the railroad company eentdown fifty

track on the north side of the main track
and workmen are now taking op pert
of tha sidetrack on the south side of
the main track, leaving only enough
sidetrack to place a few car at the depot.
The company expects by this move to
avoid the expense of macadamising its
nortion of Water street. The oontiao-

1ASKTOJ.
Judse H. L. Benson is one of
the men who have no faith in the
ability of the people to nominate
candidates for office, and, unlike
those who are proceeding by in
direction to overthow the law,
he has'the manhood to confess
his hostility. Interviewed by an
Oreeonian reporter at the Im
perial Hotel, Judge Benson said:
"I am openly and shamelessly
opposed to the entire primary
system."
With the exception of the
word "openly," this expresses
the mental attitude of all the old
gang of politicians who make
their headquarters at the Im
perial Hotel including- Senator
Fulton, Jack Matthews, Seneca
Beach, and all the rest of the old
boys who have made politics their
occupation for many years. They
are convinced that the new me
thod is destructive of party or
ionization- and so it is, if by
partv organization is meant the
absolute control of the boss.
The very men who are pro
testing; against the direct primary
law are the one3 responsible for
its enactment. The Republican
party was torn by factions. Yet
the people had nothing to say.
Thieves might fall out, but
honest men did not get their dues.
It was merely a question as to
which faction should control, and
the methods adopted were a dis
grace to the State. Public offices
were put upon the auction block
and the highest bidder got the
goods. Instead of candidates for
public office presenting their
claims to the people the dominant
faction made the ticket and the
voters Were compelled to accept:
it. One boss suceeded the other; 1
but neither faction ever inter-!

office or attempted any genuine
come ot the office holders by
compelling them to pay tribute
to the boss.
The common knowledge of
these facts caused the political
revolution of which the direct
primary law is the most impor
tant result. It is new and crude,
and doubtless needs amending;
kit Judge Benson is mistaken -- k. millee
