OIH EXHIBIT.
(From Halem DUtesm').)
The in io object of Columbia County 't
exhibit at the (tale (air i to demonstrate
that all portions of the county, from the
water level to the summits of the moun
tains are adapted to the purpose cf agri
culture. With the exception of the im
mense vegetable from Sauvie Island,
and the garden exhibit from St. Helen,
everything ,iu the Columbia County
booth wa grown on land formerly oc
cupied by heavy tir timber, aud some of
the bi-tt vegetable, fruit nnd grains
were grown at an altitude of 1400 feet
above sea level. These facts should be
borne in mind when inspecting the really
wcndeiful rhowing of this county' pro
ducts, made by E. H. Flagg, who ha
charge of the Columbia County's in
terests this year. The ground coveied
represents an area of Over 500 square
miles, the greater portions of which is
still the domain of the logger nnd tim
ber speculator Vast quantities of tim
ber are being cut annually, and settlers
are invited to purchase the logged oB
laud upon which products equal to those
shown can oe raised by the intelligent
husbandman. Mr. Flagg was the first to
advertise bis county by exhibitions at
the Lewi and Clark exposition, and
since that time Columbia has been rep
resented yearly at the Oregon state fair.
For the purpose of furnishing complete
information to prosp ctive settlers, sev
eral thousand copies of the couuty paper,
the St. Helen's Mh-t, have been printed
aud are being distributed free at the
Columbia County booth.
Among the products on display in this
booth is a wonderful individual display
by Asa Holadar, of Scappoosc, He show
sixteen varieties of apples, seventeen of
pears, and most ever) kind of frnit
grown in that section. He has a plate
of the famous Gold plum, a very rare
fruit. Very few are ever seen on exhi
bition at this fair. The grasees, veget
ables and fruits of the exhibit are of a
very Tiinh quality. Columbia County
also shows en excellent exhibit of butter
and Swiss cheese, both of bich took
first premium at the present A-Y-P ex
position.

IN SHOES
V
People formerly expected a certain amount of
discomfort in stylish shoes. They expected it
and they got it. It was one of the penalties'
they paid tor being stylish.
Nowadays they've outgrown this old belief
and realize that style doesn't necessarily mean
a sacrifice of comfort.
WALK-OVER SHOES have been instru
mental in this change of opinion.
WALK-OVER SHOES have demoustrated
that Style, comfort and service can be satisfac
