THE TIMBER "CROr"
Tut) attention o those who believe, or
profess to believe, that timber ow ners
in this comity beur more than their just
porportion of taxes is invited to the
fact that Mr. S. Benson has announced,
according to the Portland papers, tliat
ho will not ousider an ollor of les than
f 1,1X0,000 for his holdings in Columbia
County. No doubt they are worth luoie
than that, tint they are assessed for ouly
about half that sum, auil. as other pro
lierty is assessed closeuptoiu full value,
it appears that the county, in strict jus
tice to other taxpayers, should receive
at leiM f 10,000 more atinually than it is
now colUctini from the Benson Logging
Company.
If limber in Coluuiber Couuty during
the past tweuty years had been assessed
at its fair value aud the levy been the
same, a fund could have been created
the interest on which would have paid
all the running expenses of tl.e county.
Sich tnen as Benson bare made tl.eir
money easily, and, while no injustice
should lie done them, it is ridiculous to
eay t bey have been persecuted. Mr.
Bensou has made bis millions easily and
should not gnun when he is separated
from a few thousands for public pur
poses. He has no cause to kick on the
cruise, for lie has taken 70 million feet
of logs off of five places that were cruis
ed for Itss than fifteen millian feet.
These places cost Mr. Benton about
$1,000 each. At even one dollar per
thousand he has sold the "crop" for
fourteen times as much as he paid for
the land with the timber standing, and
CHOICE VS. LOTTERY.
Another great tiovprnment land draw
ing is announced to take place In Oct
ober. A total of 2,0111,000 acre of Indian
reservation land In North Dakota and
217,000 in South Dakota will be disposed
of at this drawing. The land comprises
holdings that remain from the allotment
ol lands in severalty to In Jiansof Stand
ing Kock aud Cheyenne River agencies.
The numbers will be drawn according
to Government lottery rules, at Aber
deen, S. V., during the last week In
October registrations to be made Octo
ber 4 3d.
The character of those lands, in to.
pography, soil aud resources, is similar
to that of the Flathead lands recently
disposed of by lot. That is to sav, the
landa are aeuii-aiiil. rugged, and to
some extent, irrigable. In some sections
they are what is knowu as agricultural
lands, subject to irrigation; iu others,
they fall under the schedule of "dry
farming''; in still others they are graa
ing lands, wholly uutillable, and ovtr
all there are extremes of climate.
There is a certain wild beauty and at
tractiveness about the regiou in wltith
these lands of the Rocky Mountain area
lie, tut to persons accustomed to life in
regions that are older iu civilisation and
in cultivation, they are brooded over
by a loneliness that approaches desola
tion. To subdue them and make them
habitable and profitable, according to
the civilised idea, w ill require years of
monotonous, hard tabor, aud many pri
vations will attend the effort.
But determination and peisistence
have prevailed over these conditions in
other sections of the country,, turning
the beautiful but inhospitable wilder
ness into veritable gardens of abundance
and homes of plenty and luxury. The
obstacles to be encountered iu making
homes upon these Dakota lands nie no
greater as regards climate aud labor
than were those that were bravely met
and coi.queied throughout the bread do
main of the great Middld West and
Northwest, and the isolation is not
nearly so complete as that which was
endured by the early settlers of the Mis
sissippi Valley, because the entire con
tinent is now traversed by railroads,
while their spurs aresettingout in many
directions.
Still, to those who will regard them
selves as fortunate if, in the great gov
ernmental game of chance, they should
draw a number entitling them to make
homestead entry upon these long-segregated
lands, the conditions implied in
the teiius "to live ou aud cultivate," as
antecedent to a full title, will bi mouot-j
onous euough and, if they make the I
land worth the holJing, hard enough.
The rigorous climate is a feature to be
reckoned with, especially during the
first few years, w herein everything per
taining to the settlers, heme is of the
most pnmitive type. If The Oregonian
were to offer advice to sturdy young
men. who intend to become farmers, in
tbe matter of getting a Karl in life, it
would eay to them.

contrary, they are a corse. The big
speculator has the small land owner
entirely at his mercy and can compel
Uini to take any euni the former sees

of Clattkanie would be doing five timts
the business it is to day if it were not

card and boats.
AN ILLL'STKATION
A workingrnan in this city drew $75
on the tenth day of the month His
family needed it. There was a sick baby
in the house. But the saloons g it the
money, and the man stayed away from
his family day after day. spending for
booze the m iney they shoi!d have had
for the iiecesaries of life. The saloju
keepers knew this and yet they did not
hesitate to take his wages. When lie
dies, unless he mends his wayB, lib
family will depend upon charity, either
publi - or private. Could the "blind pig"
do any worse? Is the saloon a good in
vestment either mentally, morally, or
financially?

averaging fsOuo per acre, and the i.ew
owner thinks he made an excellent pur
chase. Maybi he did, but be could Lave
done a great deal better by investing
his money in slump land in Colnmbia
County clearing it up anJ planting
and cultivating his orchard. He could
buy the land fori0 per acre, clear it
for ,75 per acre, and the three years of
Cultivation, including the planting and
purchase of the trees, Jwould certainly
not have cost him more than another
100 per acre. Thus he would have
saved at least iffiOO per acre. Possibly the
the Hood River men who sold out will
do as other Hood Kiver men havu do.ie-
iuvest his money iu stump land in Col
umbia County, and tell again at llie end
of another three years. If be does he will
be in the plutocrat class. For every acre
he eold in Hood Kiver be Can have
four acres iu Columbia County, and it
will p.oduce, with Hood Kiver methods
of cultivation, better apples in ncmi
varieties than are raised in Hood Iiiver.
This is to be one of tbe greatest factors
in the development of Columbia County,

The Mist cteamery, under the manage
ment ol Mr. Fred Mann an expert but
ter uiuker, is proving itself worthy of
the patror.age of every fanner on the
upper and lower Nehalem.
Oo;d progress has been made during
the past week in the organization of the
Columbia County Pair Association, and
i considerable stock has been subscribed.
The fair will be held September 24th and
otu, and it will be a big success in every
respect, it will be in the main a hall
show, for the reason that no inclosed
grounits can be secured in time. Next
year, however, more stocks will lie sub
scribed snd it is hoped the Association
will be in position lo pitichase land for
a permanent site for the Columbia Co.
Fair. Great interest is being manifested
and an attempt is being made to induce
the transportation companies to give
half fare rates. Those who desire to sul-
scribe to the stock of the association can
do so by authorizing the editor of tbe
Mist to sign for tbe amount tbev will
take.
